Paul Has Been Consistent on Hard Courts in 2022

For Tommy Paul, it has been a season where he has featured in one semifinal and plenty of quarterfinals.

Although he has not been able to enter a second career final, after he won in Stockholm last year, the 25-year-old did reach a maiden ATP 1000 quarterfinal at the Canadian Masters.

And while he hasn’t been effective in the back end of tournaments, he has done well in getting past the first few opponents.

A semifinalist in Delray Beach, he had a difficult time on clay, a surface where he always tends to struggle. However on hard, he is 27-15 this season and will look to improve that record further before the season comes to a close.

Recently, Paul was a quarterfinalist in Gijon and last week, he reached the second round in Stockholm before going down to Mikael Ymer. He has not produced an earth-shattering result recently but still has produced decent results. But wining the opener in Vienna will be a tough challenge as he comes up against a resurgent local favourite.

Thiem Was a Champion in 2019

2019 champion Dominic Thiem will begin his Vienna Open campaign with a new found confidence that he gained over the last two weeks in Gijon and Antwerp.

The former world no. 3, who was pushed out of the top 300 after his struggles with injury and form last year, has been playing some high quality tennis recently and as a result he is very close to breaking back into the top 100.

Currently ranked no. 113, Thiem was a semifinalist in Gijon and followed it up with a run to the final four in Antwerp. His most significant win came over World no. 11 Hubert Hurkacz in the quarterfinals last week.

As a result of the two promising performances, Thiem comes to his home tournament with a 12-4 record from the last four tournaments.

The 29-year-old had also reached the semifinals in Gstaad and quarterfinals in Kitzbuhel. But his recent surge began with a runt to the finals at the Rennes Challenger.

Coming into the tournament in terrific form, Thiem will be hoping to go deep again. He has a 15-9 record here and one of his 17 titles came in Vienna when he beat Diego Schwartzman in the final in 2019.

Paul v Thiem Prediction and Tip

Thiem knows this surface well, he is the local favourite and is also in great form. He is the favourite to win this contest.
