Taylor Fritz v Gilles Simon Head to Head

There have been two previous meetings between these two players with both having won one apiece. Simon had won in the 2016 Nice Open while Fritz retaliated with a victory of his own in 2020 at the US Open.

Fritz Overcomes Slow Start against Fokina

A title winner at the Japan Open following a bout of Covid-19, Fritz did not last too long at the Vienna Open last week. He had fallen in the second round there to the eventual finalist Denis Shapovalov but has started off well here in Paris.

The American registered a 7-5, 6-2 victory over Alejandro Davidovich Fokina in the opener to get a step closer to emulating his quarterfinal appearance in this tournament last season.

Fritz was on court for an hour and a half and overcame a 2-4 deficit in the first set to clinch the win. He broke back twice in the opening set and then overcame the loss of his serve after having won a break in the second set to win four games in a row and carving out a second round spot.

He now faces the 37-year-old Simon in the second round.

Simon Extends Career by Another Match

This is the last time Simon will be playing an ATP tournament according to an announcement he had made earlier. And down a set and 3-5 in the second against Andy Murray, it had looked like his first round match was also going to be the last of his career.

Instead, Simon recovered from that position to record a 4-6, 7-5, 6-3 win over the Brit to seal his second round berth against Fritz.

Aided by some home support and Murray’s growing frustration, Simon needed two hours and 52 minutes to come back from the dead and clinch the win.

A former semifinalist at this tournament back in 2012, Simon will now hope against hope he can end his career on another high – by overcoming the world number 11. Can he dare to dream?

Fritz v Simon Prediction and Tip

Fritz is a whopping 1/6 to win this and 1/2 to do that in straight sets, which wouldn’t be much of a surprise. Expect one of the sets to be a fighting one though.

Tip: Fritz to win AND Over 19.5 games: 7/5 (Click Here to Bet with bet365)
