Kei Nishikori v Stan Wawrinka Head to Head

The two players share a rivalry that goes back to 2012. In their nine meetings so far, Wawrinka and Nishikori have always managed to keep things interesting. Right now, it is the Swiss who leads by a slim margin with 5-4.

They last met in the Cincinnati Masters last year, where Wawrinka won in straight sets.

Nishikori – A Man on a Mission

Nishikori’s performance this season has been nothing short of exceptional. So far, he has lost only one match – the quarterfinal of the Australian Open to Novak Djokovic. In fact, it wasn’t a defeat as much as him retiring owing to fatigue. Since then, Nishikori has had plenty of time to rest and recuperate.

Prior to that, the Japanese participated in the Brisbane International where he won the tournament after defeating Daniil Medvedev in the final. This is definitely an impressive run by the top seed, who is now moving closer to his second title of the season.

So far in Rotterdam, he has defeated Pierre-Hugues Herbert and Ernests Gulbis without as much as breaking a sweat. In the quarterfinal, he defeated Marton Fucsovics 6-3, 6-2, thus continuing his winning streak.

Last year, he ended his campaign with a win-loss tally of 43-21 with no singles title. However, he did reach the final in Tokyo and Vienna, where he had to settle for the runner-up trophy. As for his performance in the Grand Slams, he reached the semifinal in the US Open and quarterfinal at the Wimbledon.

Wawrinka Looking Confident Again

After spending most of the previous season rebuilding his form, it now appears that Wawrinka is finally at a level where he would like to be. The former World No. 3 has defeated some exceptional players in Rotterdam this week, starting with Milos Raonic in the second round and then, Denis Shapovalov in the quarterfinal.

Before coming to Rotterdam, the Swiss suffered a string of defeats. He lost in the second round at the Australian Open to Raonic while in Sofia, he was knocked out by Marius Copil in the first round itself.

He hasn’t won a singles title since 2017 and last year, he finished the season with a win-loss tally of 17-17. His best run came in St. Petersburg where he reached the semifinal.

Nishikori v Wawrinka Predictions & Tips

Nishikori will start this match as the favourite to win at 4/9 with (bet365) , owing to his ranking, experience, and most importantly, his recent momentum.

However, Wawrinka leads the head to head tally and has been quite impressive this week. More than that, he is equally experienced and as a Grand Slam champion, he can very well defeat Nishikori here. It wouldn’t be surprising if this goes to three sets.
