Sebastian Korda v Yoshihito Nishioka Head to Head

There have been two previous meetings between these two players and Korda has won them both.

The first came at the 2021 Parma Open on clay while the next one was held at Antwerp last year.

Korda Continues Solid Run with Shock Sinner Win

While wins over Andy Murray and Roberto Bautista Agut in the first two rounds of this competition weren’t quite shock victories, they would have played a huge part in boosting Korda’s morale coming into this one against Jannik Sinner.

Which is why despite going into this quarterfinal as a 6/4 underdog against Sinner, Korda managed to mark out a straight-set win and march into the semis. Korda needed a mere hour and 22 minutes to win 7-5, 6-1.

The two players exchanged a break of serve apiece in the first four games of the encounter but from there on, it was Korda who took charge.

He saved three set-points off his own serve in the 10th game before breaking Sinner and then winning the opening set in the 12th. And Korda followed that up with three breaks of serves in the second set even as he lost a mere three points on his own serve to clinch the win.

Can he now stave off the surprise challenge of Nishioka in the semifinals?

Nishioka Edges Past Popyrin

Alexei Popyrin wasn’t quite the favourite going into this quarterfinal but for the first two sets it was hard to fathom who actually held the aces.

Nishioka was down an early break and then broke back in the sixth game before winning the opening set in a tie-breaker. The script repeated itself in the second set but this time Nishioka had two match-points while Popyrin frittered away three set-points before levelling things out.

It was only in the third set that Nishioka ran away with the encounter as he broke his opponent twice without a return, clinching a 7-6 (4), 6-7 (8), 6-2 win.

This follows Nishioka’s shock win over Holger Rune in the first round and a victory against Mackenzie McDonald in the second.

A shock win over Korda will get him in his third finals appearance in less than five months!

Korda v Nishioka Prediction and Tip

While Nishioka is the second favourite here by some distance, expect him to put up a solid showing and win at least a set.
