Pigossi Comes Through after Badosa Withdrawal

Pigossi is ranked 113th in the world and missed out on the direct entry cut-off by a few ranks.

As a result of that, she was forced to go through the qualifiers and while she was aided by the withdrawal of Misaki Doi in the second round, Pigossi looked to have crashed out of the tournament when she lost to Arianne Hartono in the third.

And then Paula Badosa withdrew from the tournament because of a thigh injury and Pigossi made it through as a lucky loser.

Earlier in the season, Pigossi had represented Brazil in the United Cup and won one of her two matches – defeating Ulrikke Eikeri in straight sets after suffering a similar defeat at the hands of Lucia Bronzetti.

Can Pigossi now ride her Australian Open luck to win her first ever match at a Grand Slam?

McNally Ousted in Auckland Opener

Unlike Pigossi, McNally did not need to participate in the qualifiers here but is coming into the tournament on the back of just one match played.

She featured in the Auckland Open and crashed out of the tournament in the very first round, losing in three sets to Ysaline Bonaventure.

While that meant she fell two places on the rankings charts, McNally is coming off one of the best seasons of her career. Having fallen to 229th in the world due to some poor form, McNally bounced back remarkable to break into the top 100 of the WTA charts.

This was thanks to a quarterfinal at the Ostrava Open and solid performances in a couple of WTA 125 tournaments to go with that.

Can she now emulate her 2020 showing at this tournament when she had defeated Samantha Stosur to make the second round?

Pigossi v McNally Prediction and Tip

Pigossi could prove to be a handful for McNally who starts off a favourite. While the Brazilian player is 4/1 to win this, she could push this into a third.
