Gilles Simon v David Goffin Head to Head
The two men have met four times before, with honours even in their head to head series. Simon won their first encounter on the grass at Queen’s before Goffin notched a victory in the Miami Masters in 2016. A year later, it was Simon’s turn to claim the win in Shanghai, with Goffin triumphing in their most recent meeting in Montpellier last year.
Simon – Two-time Champion Hoping for a Third Title
Simon has won this event twice before, in 2007 and 2015, but he had a real fight to make it through to this stage this year, having twice beat taken to three sets, first by compatriot Antoine Hoag in the first round, and then by Peter Gojowczyk of Germany in their second round match-up on Thursday.
The 34-year old has a very good record In Marseille – he has won twenty-six times out of the thirty-six matches he has played in the tournament over the years, and will be hoping that he can make it twenty-seven on Friday.
Goffin – Taking Confidence from Paire Victory
Goffin seeded three for the tournament, will take confidence from his victory over Benoît Paire in the second round on Wednesday.
Results in 2019 have not gone his way so far, so to be able to beat Paire, a tricky opponent on his day, Goffin is the first male tennis player from Belgium to reach the ATP top ten, and is somewhat of a hero in his native land.
The winner of 4 ATP senior tour titles he can be unpredictable on his day, 6-2, 6-3, will stand him in good stead, not just for this tournament, but those to come.
Again he will have the crowd against him, as the majority of the spectators in the Marseille arena on Friday will be backing the local French player. But he showed he could handle that in his match against Paire, and that should not impact on his performance.
Simon v Goffin Predictions & Tips
Goffin will start favourite for the match as the higher-ranked player but he will need to be wary of Simon, who is something of a Marseille specialist. However, it may come down to age in the end – Simon is now 34, and has had two hard matches in his legs, whilst Goffin is younger and should be fresher and should win this one.
