Laura Siegemund v Irina Camelia Begu Head to Head
The pair have never played each other before. This will be the first match between the 34 year old German, and the Romanian, who is ten years younger.

Siegemund Comes From Behind to Beat Italian
Siegemund, who is better known as a doubles player these days, was drawn in the first round with Lucia Bronzetti, the Italian ranked 120 places above her in the world.
The German began badly, was broken in her opening service game, and then had to save two more break points in her next.
She did have break back opportunities of her own, could not take any of them, and the first set belonged to Bronzetti.
However, she broke the Italian at the start of the second set, and the match appeared to be tilting her way, until she dropped her own serve again. She responded, though, with an immediate break of her own, and a few minutes later, had served out to level the match.
The decisive moment came when a series of dropped serves in the third set left the German a break to the good.
A hold to love saw Bronzetti serving to stay in the match, a task that proved beyond her.

Begu Survives First Round American Scare
Begu’s Australian Open campaign was almost over before it started, as she survived a major first round scare against the American Lucky Loser, Elizabeth Mandlik, ranked 129th in the world.
Both women found holding serve extremely difficult from the start of the match, and, after each had saved break points, there were sixth breaks against serve in the first set alone.
However, in the middle of that sequence, Mandlik held hers twice and she had the advantage.
The pattern continued in the second set, with neither woman able to find any consistency.
It eventually went to a tie-break, where, for the first time, Begu was able to assert some dominance, and the match was level.
The third set saw the Romanian gradually improve, and she went a break up. Another break gave her the chance to serve for the match, but she squandered two match points, before the American was broken again for what proved to be the last action of an error strewn match.
Siegemund v Begu Prediction and Tip
Although Begu is the much higher ranked player, she made such hard work of her first round victory, that it is difficult to have any confidence in her beating an experienced player like Siegemund.
The German has an excellent chance of reaching the third round in Melbourne for the first time in her career.
