World no. 59 Anna Kalinskaya is 3-3 in 2023 and 1-2 in the main draws.

She lost the first qualifying round in Adelaide-1, but won both the qualifiers in Adelaide-2 to make the main draw. She then knocked out Jelena Ostapenko in straight sets to win her first main draw match of the season, but fell in the round of 16 to Belinda Bencic.

At the Australian Open, Kalinskaya met 2022 finalist Danielle Collins in the first round and gave her a tough fight before going down in three sets.

The 24-year-old Russian had a decent run last year. She reached her maiden WTA 1000 quarterfinal in Guadalajara, defeating Barbora Krejcikova, Elise Mertens and Daria Kasatkina en route. She had also reached the semifinals in Guadalajara-1 and was a quarterfinalist in Washington.

In 2022, she also got her second top 10 win when she defeated then world no. 6 Karolina Pliskova en route the third round in Miami.

She has had an ordinary start to 2023, with a 1-2 record in the main draws. Can she begin well in Hua Hin?

Makarova Comes Through Qualifiers

World no. 230 Ekaterina Makarova made it to the main draw of the Hua Hin Open with a straight sets win over Japan’s Miyu Kato in the second qualifying round on Sunday.

Makarova converted 6 of 10 break points and saved 1 of 4 to beat the Japanese 6-4, 6-1 in an hour and nine minutes.

The Russian had needed over two and a half hours to beat Thailand’s Aunchisa Chanta in the first qualifying round. The local player had bounced back after losing the first set, but eventually lost the contest 6-4, 3-6, 7-5.

Makarova ha converted 10 of 16 break points and saved 8 of 18 against Chanta.

Makarova is 5-3 from all matches this year. She was knocked out of the first qualifying round at the Australian Open, but made it to the semifinals of an ITF event in Bhopal, India. She then lost in teh first round of an ITF event in Pune, before winning teh two qualifying round in Hua Hin.

Last year, Makarova had a 46-33 record, playing bulk of her matches on clay. She reached three iTF finals, all on clay, and won two of them. In all, she has won a total of five ITF titles from 8 finals.

Kalinskaya is much more experienced and has been playing against the top guns for a while. She is also ranked in the top 60 and is the fourth seed in the tournament. Expect her to get her campaign off to a quick start against the qualifier.
