Adrian Mannarino started well in Dallas beating native player Steve Johnson in two sets. He’s always been a fairly good player on hard courts but what makes him really tricky to play is his playstyle. He utilizes very precise shots albeit without much power.
That can work really well against players that don’t move that well to be able to catch all of those shots. He doesn’t mind playing longer rallies but his efficiency drops off the longer it is. A very precise first serve is perfectly suited for these conditions and he was simply on point in all of that against Johnson.
He’ll need more of those against Thompson because of the Australian won’t spam too many errors. It’s not his game and I expect this to be a very tactical cat-and-mouse match which should be very close.
A lot will depend on who will play the crucial rallies better and any tiebreak if it happens. Mannarino plays them really well so he should have a very good chance to make it happen.

Thompson Cruises Past Kudla
Jordan Thompson has looked very good in his first match against Denis Kudla here. The Australian seems to have found the way he wants to play tennis and he’s been posting rather solid results lately. The start of the year was disappointing with only a 2-4 record but he’s finding his rhythm.
Beating Kudla was a good start but he’ll need much more to dispatch Mannarino. He can be very moody and streaky at times making this a tough matchup for him generally. The H2H would confirm that however, he did win their only meeting on hard.
Thompson will need good serving and a calm head. Mannarino will certainly frustrate him with his precise shots but if he outlasts him in longer rallies and win the crucial rallies he’ll be in a good position.
North America generally suits him well so it will be interesting to see whether he can rise to this challenge. It’s a pretty big one.
Mannarino v Thompson Prediction and Tip
The H2H favours Mannarino 3-1 but all his wins came on grass. Thompson’s win came on a hard court but it was in Australia and three years ago. Neither of their matches was played recently but I’ll stick with Mannarino to get it done.
