World no. 19 Liudmila Samsonova overcame a tough start to beat America’s Claire Liu in the opening round of the Abu Dhabi Open on Tuesday.
The 24-year-old came back from a break down in the first set, but conceded a second break late in the set to find herself trailing 0-1. But the Russian took control of things in the second set. She broke the world no. 56 twice in the second set to draw level and then bageled Liu in the final set to finish the match in emphatic style.
The 3-6, 6-2, 6-0 win came in an hour and 56 minutes. Samsonova won 87% points on her first serve and converted 6 of 8 break points that she held in the match.
Following the victory in he first round, she improved to 3-3 in 2023. While she could only reach as far as the second round at the Australian Open and Adelaide-1, she faced a first round defeat in Adelaide-2.
Samsonova is a four-time champion on the tour, having never lost a final. She won three title during a 30-17 overall campaign last year.

Krejcikova Routs Ruse
Facing Samsonova will be Barbora Krejcikova, who made quick work of Romania’s Elena-Gabriela Ruse on Tuesday to sail into the second round of the competition.
The world no. 30 was broken once in each set by the qualifier, but she was solid on return and broke the world no. 148 thrice in the first set and twice in the second for a 6-1, 6-4 victory in an hour and 14 minutes.
Krejcikova won 80% points on her first serve and 55% return points in the match.
The 2021 French Open champion, who had peaked to no. 2 in the rankings in February last year, had struggled for most parts of last year. But she finished on a high winning back to back titles in Tallinn and Ostrava.
She has had a decent start to 2023, having reached the round of 16 at the Australian Open. Can she reach her first quarterfinal of the season with a win on Thursday?
Samsonova v Krejcikova Prediction and Tip
It’s expected to be a close contest. Samsonova is the eighth seed but Krejcikova is in slightly better form. Three sets seem imminent with the Russian edging through.
