Sasmonova had beaten the Swiss three times in their series, and she looked on course to do the same in Abu Dhabi, when she held three match points in the second set tiebreak. But Bencic snuffed the danger saving all three of them, before going to win the third set 6-4.
It’s the first time Samsonova has lost a WTA final, and that will surely hurt particularly after spurning those three championships points.
But on the bright side, she has the chance to bounce back almost immediately at the Qatar Open, provided she is not fatigued.

Kenin Shows Promise Despite Losses
Sofia Kenin’s slump was one of the most disappointing stories on the women’s side of things for the past two seasons. Kenin, who was ranked as high as No. 4 in the world, and with a Grand Slam title under her belt, was destined for big things.
But injuries and loss of form have hindered her progress immensely.
However, she has started the year on a positive note, reaching a WTA semifinal in Hobart, and running Victoria Azarenka very close in their marquee first-round match at the Australian Open.
But in light of that positive start, Kenin has been on the wrong side of some narrow defeats this year. In fact, she has lost three on the bounce as she comes to the Qatar Open via a wild card.
