After getting an opening round bye, Fritz registered hard-fought wins over fellow Americans Jack Sock and Marcos Giron to make it to the semifinal of the Dallas Open last week.
His quest for his maiden title for the season looked to be going in the right direction too as he took on the unheralded Chinese player, Wu Yibing in the last four stage.
Yibing had been having the week of his tennis career and he managed to surprise both Fritz and John Isner in successive matches to lift the trophy in the end. And Fritz, who had come into that match on the back of seven wins from nine matches before that this season, fell in a gruelling encounter.
Fritz now returns in the hope he can fine-tune his performances in the lead-up to the Indian Wells Masters which will be played early next month. As a defending champion in that tournament, the American could do with some solid showings in its lead-up.

Gomez Cruises Past Wu
Tung-lin Wu had entered the main draw here with a couple of qualifying victories including one over Brandon Holt and in a hardcourt competition could have posed a serious threat to Gomez.
In fact, even the bookmakers were confused about this one with both players coming into this first round encounter at 10/11 odds to win.
It was Gomez who came through in the end, winning a two hour, 13 minutes long encounter 7-6 (3), 6-4 to move into the second round. This victory follows his quarterfinal appearance at the Dallas Open where he lost to eventual finalist John Isner.
Strangely, in a tournament where breaking serves might not be the easiest, there were a total of seven breaks of serves in the encounter. Gomez was 3-5 down in the first set and faced three set-points too before turning things around.
