Jessica Pegula v Jelena Ostapenko Head to Head
Pegula leads the rivalry 2-1. Their last meeting was in Doha in 2021, which the American won in straight sets.

Pegula Off to an 8-2 Start
World no. 4 Jessica Pegula has an opening round bye and so she will be playing her first match of the tournament in the round of 16 on Wednesday.
The second seed is one of the top contenders for the title and she brings an 8-2 season record into the tournament.
The 28-year-old finished with a 4-1 record in the United States’s successful United Cup campaign. Among those four wins was a straight sets drubbing of world no. 1 Iga Swiatek.
Pegula played an important role in her country’s run to the title at the inaugural mixed-gender tournament and then she carried that form into the Australian Open. A quarterfinalist in the Melbourne major in 2021 and 2022, she once again made it to the last eight stage but a first major semifinal remained elusive as she went down to Victoria Azarenka in straight sets.
Pegula is playing in Doha for the third time. She was a semifinalist in 2021 but was knocked out in the second round last year. She however won the doubles title with Coco Gauff in 2022.
She is a two-time champion on the tour and reached her first two WTA 1000 finals last year, losing in Madrid but wining in Guadalajara. She will be eager to go deep in the tournament and for that will be hoping for a good start on Wednesday.

Ostapenko Knocks Out Keys
World no. 14 Jelena Ostapenko needed just an hour and 17 minutes to knock out Madison Keys in the first round of the Qatar Open.
The Latvian, who fell two places in the rankings to no. 14 this week, overcame a 0-3 start to take the opening set. With Ostapenko dominating the back end of the opening set, the momentum had shifted towards her and she didn’t give Keys much of a chance in the second set. Ostapenko broke the American twice in the second set to seal a 7-5, 6-2 victory.
The 2017 French Open champion is off to a good start in 2023. She had earlier reached her maiden Australian Open quarterfinal and a first in a major since her semifinal finish at Wimbledon in 2018. But she couldn’t make the final four stage in Melbourne, going down to Elena Rybakina.
In the other tournaments, Ostapenko could win just one match in Adelaide-1 and Abu Dhabi, while she lost her opener in Adelaide-2. Having safely negotiated the first round in Qatar, she will be aiming for more wins in the tournament, as she bids to match or better her last year’s performance, when she reached the semifinals.
A five time champion from 13 finals, Ostapenko was also a finalist in Doha in 2016. Can she pull of a surprise on Wednesday and keep charging towards a second final at the Qatar Open?
Pegula v Ostapenko Prediction and Tip
