Jessica Pegula v Barbora Krejcikova Head to Head

They have met only once before and that was this year at the Australian Open. Pegula won that match in straight sets.

Pegula Advances as Muchova Retires

Third seed Jessica Pegula reached the semifinal of the Dubai Open after her quarterfinal opponent Karolina Muchova withdrew with an abdominal injury before the start of the contest.

This is now the world no. 3’s best ever showing in Dubai. Her previous best was a quarterfinal finish in 2021.

Pegula has demonstrated excellent form so far this year, losing just three matches while winning 13.

While she played an important role in Team America’s triumph at the inaugural United Cup, her best performance in individual capacity came in Qatar last week, when the American reached the final, before finishing runner-up to word no. 1 Iga Swiatek.

The win was a revenge for Swiatek, as Pegula had beaten the Pole during her 4-1 run at the United Cup.

Pegula had also made it to the quarterfinal of the Australian Open for the third consecutive year, but once again she fell short of a first ever semifinal spot in a Grand Slam.

The 28-year-old had begun her Dubai campaign with a 6-2, 5-7, 6-1 win over Viktoriya Tomova in the second round. She then ousted Anna Bogdan 6-4, 6-3 in the round of 16. Into the semifinal, can she now reach a second fnal in two weeks?

Krejcikova Battles Past Sabalenka

Outplayed by Aryna Sabalenka in the first set, Barbora Krejcikova clawed her way back into the contest in the second and then raced to victory in the third set to win her fourth consecutive match this week and reach the semifinal in Dubai for the second time in her career.

The first time she had reached this far, it was in 2021, when the Czech had gone on to reach the final only to fall to Garbine Muguruza.

Ranked no. 30th in the world, Krejcikova had a terrible start in the quarterfinal against the Australian Open champion, winning just 6 of 19 service points and 7 of 21 return points while getting bagelled.

She found a way back into the contest in the second set, when she came back from a break down in the middle of the set and then dominated the tiebreak to draw level at one-set apiece.

Krejcikova then took complete control of the match in the final set, and finished the contest by winning the last five games in a row. Her 0-6, 7-6 (7-2), 6-1 victory came in an hour and 58 minutes.

It was the second time that she had needed three sets to beat an opponent. The Czech , who defeated Irina Begu in straight sets in the opener, had edged out seventh seed Daria Kasatkina in a three-set second round contest.

Krejcikova had then knocked out the 12th seed Petra Kvitova in straight sets in the third round, before accounting for the second seed in the quarterfinals.

Can the 2021 French Open champion reach a ninth final of her career with a win on Friday? She is a five-time champion with her most recent triumphs coming in Tallinn and Ostrava in October last year.

Pegula v Krejcikova Prediction and Tip

While Krejcikova is 9-4 this year, Pegula has displayed better form. She was a finalist last week, has beaten some good players this year and is 13-3 overall in 2023. She also will have the psychological edge after defeating Krejcikova in straight sets at the Australian Open.
