Jiri Lehecka came back from a set down to knock out the top seed Andrey Rublev on Thursday and move into the semifinal of the Qatar Open.
The 21-year-old Czech is off to a brilliant start in 2023 and he seems to be getting better with every match. Thursday’s win was the first top five win of his career.
The 2022 ATP NextGen runner-up conceded the only break of the first set, but drew level in the second by getting the solitary break of the set in the final game. Lehecka broke early in the third, building a 3-0 lead and then squandered a match point on Rublev’s serve while leading at 5-2. But he served out the match in the next game to complete a 4-6, 6-4, 6-3 victory.
The win improved Lehecka to 13-3 across levels in 2023. His biggest achievement this year was a run to a maiden Grand Slam quarterfinal at the Australian Open. Currently he is on a five-match winning streak.
Lehecka won both his Davis Cup singles matches against Portugal and then carried that form to Doha, where he knocked out Damir Džumhur and Emil Ruusuvuori in the first two rounds in straight sets.
Following the win over Rublev on Thursday, he will be high on confidence. Can he make it to a maiden ATP final with a win on Friday?

Murray Rallies Past Muller
For the third straight time in the tournament, Andy Murray edged out an opponent in a three-set thriller.
Murray’s latest win came over surprise quarterfinalist Alexandre Muller on Thursday. The 35-year-old Scot broke early to lead 2-0 in the opening set, but the Frenchman won the next four games in a row and then held on to take the first set. Pegged back, the world no. 70 made a resounding comeback over the next two sets to demolish the world no. 170, 4-6, 6-1, 6-2.
The former no. 1, who received a wild card for this tournament, had saved three match points before beating Lorenzo Sonego 4-6, 6-1, 7-6 (7-4) in the first round. He then ousted Alexander Zverev 7-6 (7-5), 2-6, 7-5 in a three-hour second-round contest.
The 46-time tour-level champion will be looking to reach his 71st final with a win on Friday. He has a brilliant record in Doha and if he does reach the final it will be the fifth time he achieves the feat in Qatar.
Muray won the titles in 2008 and 2009 and finished runner-up in 2007 and 2017. Murray had reached two finals last year, but failed to win either of them. He is still looking to win a first title since his success in Antwerp in 2019. Can he end the four-year title drought in Qatar?
