Daniil Medvedev v Borna Coric Head to Head
This is an interesting rivalry which has seen four iterations – six if you include the Next Gen Finals where they met twice in 2017 – between 2018 and 2019. Coric won three of those four matches.
They haven’t played since the 2019 St. Petersburg Open, a title that Medvedev won by beating Coric in the final.

Medvedev Blows Past Bublik
For the 11th time in a row, Medvedev went past his opponent to march on to the next round. And this time around, the two-time ATP winner for the season, Medvedev dispatched Alexander Bublik in straight sets to reach the quarterfinal.
Medvedev, who had won 6-4, 6-2 against Matteo Arnaldi in the first round, registered exactly the same scoreline against Bublik as well. He was on court for a mere 66 minutes before progressing to the next stage.
What made the win so facile was Medvedev did not face a single break-point in the match but more vitally won 29 of the 30 points on his first serve. As compared to that, Bublik a total of 31 points on serve from the 54 he played.
These two wins in Dubai come on the back of the two successive title victories for Medvedev. This tournament has a certain someone called Novak Djokovic waiting for him potentially at the semifinal stage but given Medvedev’s form, that could turn out to be a ripper of a contest.
Before that though, it’s Medvedev’s chance to set his head to head record against Coric straight.

A Struggling Win for Coric
In sharp contrast to what happened in the first round, Coric took a long time to get past his second round opponent in this Dubai competition.
After having been on court for a few moments before Daniel Evans retired from their first encounter with the score reading 2-2 in the first set, Coric needed nearly three hours before he made it through the second round.
Coric eventually won 6-7 (4), 6-3, 7-5 against Thanasi Kokkinakis and set up this meeting with Medvedev.
Despite enduring 20 aces from his Aussie opponent, Coric did not face a single break-point in the entire match while getting past his opponent’s serve on three occasions.
Coric also had a couple of break-points in the first set including a set-point on his opponent’s serve but did not convert those and lost the ensuing tie-breaker. From that point on, however, it turned out to be one-way traffic despite all that Kokkinakis managed to throw at his opponent.
What’s quite sure here is Coric will need to take a lot more of his very few chances he might get in his quarterfinal against Medvedev.

While Coric has shown he has the will to fight, Medvedev’s current form makes him a favourite to not just win but to do that in straight sets.
