Alexander Zverev v Lorenzo Sonego Head to Head

Their only previous meeting came at the 2021 Monte-Carlo Masters and Zverev had won that in straight sets.

Zverev Eases Past O’Connell

It has not been the easiest of seasons returning back from his injury layoff but Zverev looks to have found some rhythm. Or at least that’s what has been the case over the past two rounds including his latest win over Christopher O’Connell.

Zverev needed an hour and 20 minutes only to get past O’Connell, winning their second round encounter 7-5, 6-4 to seal his quarterfinal berth.

Slamming 11 aces and winning 90% of his first serve points in the entire match, such was Zverev’s dominance on serve, he did not face a single break-point. To add to that he broke O’Connell twice to wrap up the win.

He had earlier entered the tournament on the back of six defeats from the previous nine matches but then defeated the highly Jiri Lehecka in a three-set thriller in the first round. Fortune looks to be on his side too with the draw being made clearer with the ouster of Felix Auger-Aliassime.

Sonego Sends Auger-Aliassime Packing

With form not being on Felix Auger-Aliassime there were always going to be some vulnerabilities coming into this tournament. Still, not too many expected him to go out in the manner he did at the hands of Sonego in the second round.

Sonego was on court for nearly two hours but was the last man standing in his second round match as he carved out a 7-6 (4), 6-4 victory over Auger-Aliassime.

Rather interestingly, Sonego’s serving stats resembled Zverev’s with the Italian winning 89% of his first serve points and facing no break-points in the encounter. He got himself a break-point opportunity in the third and seventh games of the second set and managed to break his opponent in the latter to come away a winner.

This follows an equally straightforward first round win over Marc-Andrea Huesler after having struggled through most part of the season.

In fact other than his quarterfinal appearance at the Montpellier Open, Sonego had won just one match from five previous tournaments he had played. In a lot of ways, his struggles have been quite similar to his opponent’s.

Zverev v Sonego Prediction and Tip

Here are two players who enter this match on the back of some poor form before this tournament but with a rare set of successive wins in this one. One of them will go through and make it three in three for the first time in 2023 and we reckon this could be Zverev as he pushes on his rhythm. Three sets a possibility though.
