Andrey Rublev v Botic van de Zandschulp Head to Head

There have been two previous meetings between these two players, at the 2017 Rotterdam Open qualifiers and the quarterfinals of the St. Petersburg Open in 2021, and rather interestingly van de Zandschulp has won it both times.

Rublev Stutters Through to a Win over Fokina

Despite starting out a 1/3 favourite against Alejandro Davidovich Fokina, Rublev struggled and stuttered through to narrow win over his Spanish opponent to make it to the last eight.

Rublev needed nearly two and a half hours and saved five match-points in the process before coming through to a win.

Down a set and unable to break his opponent in the second set, Rublev then fell 6-1 behind in the tie-breaker that followed. Faced with five match-points, Rublev saved all of them before winning the next three as well to clinch the equaliser.

Due credit to Davidovich Fokina to not capitulate from that position as he continued to hold in all of his service games before Rublev sealed off the match in the final set tie-breaker.

Rublev will need to start finding answers around why he was unable to get past the Fokina serve all match as he faces another tricky opponent here.

van de Zandschulp Makes a Comeback Victory against Ymer

Much like Rublev, even van de Zandschulp took his time to get going and needed three sets to clinch his place in the last eight.

Van de Zandschulp overcame the Swedish world number 59 Mikael Ymer 3-6, 6-3, 6-3 in two hours and 34 minutes to win his second successive match for the second time this season.

The last time he had done that was in the Pune Open in the first tournament of the year where he had a first round bye before winning his second round and quarterfinal matches there.

Since then, van de Zandschulp has had opening round victories at the Australian Open, Rotterdam Open and Qatar Open but failed to make it past that. Having shocked Karen Khachanov, this was van de Zandschulp’s best chance to make it two in two again before he lost the first set of his second round match to see that slipping away.

Fortunately for van de Zandschulp, he did well to register a comeback win and set up this quarterfinal with the out of sorts Rublev.

Rublev v van de Zandschulp Prediction and Tip

While on paper Rublev is a 7/20 favourite to win this we must consider the kind of struggles he has faced in recent times. Given that being the case, can he live up to those odds and/or the difference in the rankings?
