Murray Returns after Doha Sparkle
Between 2019 and 2021, i.e. for a period of three years, Murray’s on and off court struggles were so bad that he failed to break into the top 100 of the rankings. Over 2022 and this early part of 2023, he looks to be finding his old rhythm and constantly found results that have helped him remain in the top 50 on the ATP charts.
His performance at the ATP Doha was one such example.
Having come into the tournament on the back of of a third round appearance at the Australian Open – where he featured in two five-set wins – Murray stunned Alexander Zverev and overcame the young sensation Jiri Lehecka on his way to the final.
And while Daniil Medvedev proved to be too strong for Murray in the title-decider, it wasn’t too straightforward for the Russian despite his straight-set win.
What Murray will hope for is strong start here in Indian Wells, at a tournament he has been a finalist once way back in 2009. Last year, Murray was knocked out in the second round.

Etcheverry at Career Best after Santiago Showing
The good news for Etecheverry is his strong performances in the South American clay court competitions have propelled him to a career-best ranking of 61st in the world. This included a solid run at the Santiago Open last week which saw him reach the final where he lost to Nicolas Jarry.
Etecheverry got the better of some fine clay-courters in that competition too.
He defeated a former Masters 1000 champion Fabio Fognini, then overpowered the talented Argentine Francisco Cerundolo, routed Dusan Lajovic before getting past the 1/2 favourite Sebastian Baez to make it to the final.
On the other hand, Etecheverry himself hasn’t done too much on surfaces other than clay.
This year itself, he has featured in two such tournaments, losing in the first round in Adelaide and the second at the Australian Open. Against an in-form Murray, life on court might not be easy.
