Elise Mertens v Xinyu Wang Head to Head

This will be their first meeting on the WTA Tour.

Mertens Coming off a Good Run

World No. 37 Elise Mertens has enjoyed a good build-up to the BNP Paribas Open, having reached the semifinal just last week in the WTA Monterrey.

It was her first such feat of the season (and a much-needed one at that), given that the Belgian had struggled with form up until then.

Her exploits in Mexico saw her beat Diana Shnaider, Elena-Gabriel Ruse, and Elisabetta Cocciaretto before losing to Caroline Garcia. Up until that point, her previous best result was a third-round showing in the Australian Open.

The 27-year-old is now 10-6 and for what it’s worth, finds herself in her element. She has won the Indian Wells doubles twice in the last three years with Aryna Sabalenka and Su-Wei Hsieh.

Wang Enoying a Decent Start

Xinyu Wang recently reached her career-best ranking at the 65th spot, before dropping down two places this Monday.

Her record now stands at 11-8 as the 21-year-old continues to work hard. Her best results include a quarterfinal stint in Hobart (as a qualifier) and a semifinal showing in Hua Hin.

Wang also featured in an ITF event in Irapuato where she made it to the quarters. In the Mexican events over the last couple of weeks, she made it as far as round two. On the doubles side of things, she was the runner-up in Hua Hin and Merida.

All in all, Xinyu is an opponent who is not be underestimated.

Mertens v Wang Prediction and Tip

Mertens has done well of late, but the fact remains that she is not immune to shock losses or early defeats. Wang may not have beaten that many top players in her career yet, but she certainly has the skills to change that in due time. Elise will need to be careful here.
