Botic van de Zandschulp v Alexei Popyrin Head to Head

Their only previous meeting came at the 2021 Antwerp Open and van de Zandschulp had won that in three.

Van de Zandschulp Coming Back from Injury

Having been seeded at the Indian Wells Open as well, van de Zandschulp bowed out of that competition in the second round itself after suffering an ankle injury.

The Dutchman was down 7-5, 3-2 in his match against Ilya Ivashka when he opted out of the encounter because of his fitness concerns.

That defeat aside, however, van de Zandschulp has been quite consistent in his performances this season. He might not have gone deep into competitions so far but he has been winning his opening matches at each of the competitions.

Only in Pune in what was his first tournament of the year and more recently in Dubai did van de Zandschulp clinch successive victories. Unfortunately for the world number 32, he followed that Dubai showing with the ankle problem.

After a first round bye here, van de Zandschulp will hope his fitness is back to its best again.

Popyrin Benefits from Ymer Injury

Having shown signs of some rhythm at the Indian Wells Open where Popyrin had made the main draw and then won a round to enter the second, he went on to build on that at the Phoenix Challenger last week.

And with wins over Oscar Otte and Mikael Ymer, Popyrin entered the quarterfinal at that tournament.

While he fell away to Nuno Borges in that alst eight encounter, Popyrin looks to have used that form to edge past Ymer again here. More specifically he led Ymer by a set before the Swede retired from the contest because of fitness concerns.

What that meant was Popyrin had helped himself to a third successive second round appearance at this tournament. Can he now emulate his best showing here?

van de Zandschulp v Popyrin Prediction and Tip

van de Zandschulp could be tested by his Aussie opponent and we could see a third set here. Even if the match does finish in two, it doesn’t seem like it would be the quickest two-setter around either.
