Madison Keys v Hailey Baptiste Preview

  • Head to Head: Their only previous meeting came at the 2019 Washington Open and Baptiste had stunned Keys in the first round there.

It should come as no surprise that Keys is a 1/9 favourite in this match given how the very difference in their rankings – she is 22nd to her opponent’s 275th.

Baptiste, however, will be glad with the way she has gone about her business in this tournament, having made the main draw and then shocked Xiyu Wang in her opener. She had gone in as a rank outsider at 2/1 to win that match but routed Wang 6-3, 6-3 to make it through.

Keys will be a different kettle of fish though and as a former winner of this tournament, she has done enough on clay to show she can ease her way through against a player of the capability of Baptiste.

The United Cup winner Keys will be our pick for a straight-set win.

Keys v Baptiste Tip

Keys to win in straight sets: 2/5 (bet365)

Linda Fruhvirtova v Caroline Dolehide Preview

  • Head to Head: This will be their first meeting

Fruhvirtova is a highly talented teenager but her form this year hasn’t been an indicator of what she is deemed to be capable of. Yet anyway.

But the way she came through in her first round match against Jil Teichmann will give her fans some hope that Fruhvirtova could turn a corner in this second quarter of the season. She won 6-2, 3-6, 6-2 to seal her second round berth here much like she had done last time.

Up against her is Dolehide who has never seen the top 100 on the WTA Rankings but had started off her opening round match against Sabine Lisicki as a 3/5 favourite. Lisicki hasn’t played a lot of top-level tennis and Dolehide took full advantage of that by cruising to a 6-4, 6-4 win.

It won’t be as easy for Dolehide against Fruhvirtova though with the latter showing what she is capable of when she gets her A game out. Going in with a Fruhvirtova win but unsure of the nature of it.

Fruhvirtova v Dolehide Tip

Fruhvirtova to win: 8/15 (bet365)

Julia Grabher v Sachia Vickery Preview

  • Head to Head: While they have never faced off at the highest level, they did play each other on the ITF circuit in 2022 and Vickery had won that in three.

Grabher knew she would be in a battle of wits against the veteran Shuai Zhang in their opening round encounter and that’s exactly how it turned out. The 89th-ranked player outdid the world number 28 in a three-set match that could have gone either way.

This did end Grabher’s three-match losing streak and won Grabher just her second main draw match of the season.

She now faces the 187th-ranked Vickery who did not have a lot of difficulties in going past Kayla Day. Vickery came through 6-4, 6-2 but now goes up against a player who holds a career clay court record of 307-163 (across all tournaments).

Grabher’s vast experience on clay should make her a heavy favourite in this one.

Grabher v Vickery Tip

Grabher to win: 1/1 (bet365)

Bernarda Pera v Cristina Bucșa Preview

  • Head to Head: Pera has won their only previous meeting which came on the ITF circuit in 2017.

This is a match between two players who both needed three sets to get past their respective first round opponents. Even more interestingly, both players lost the second set to a tie-breaker before easing past their opponents in the third.

Pera was an 8/11 favourite against Claire Liu but was on court for two hours and 43 minutes for her hard-fought win. It wasn’t too different for Bucsa, who was 8/5 against Marie Bouzkova but two hours and 54 minutes later had come through with a rare victory.

What must be quickly looked at here is Pera is a clay-court specialist, having won two career titles and both on that surface. Interestingly, both came last year which means she is now on a 11-match winning streak on clay and will be our pick to make it 12 in 12.

Bucșa v Pera Tip

Pera to win: 8/13 (bet365)
