Casper Ruud v Sebastian Baez Head to Head

This will be the first meeting between these two clay-court specialists.

Ruud Stutters Past Sousa

As far as form goes, Ruud has been struggling all season. He had even admitted before the start of this tournament in Estoril that it could have been down to a poor pre-season whereby he missed his training sessions in order to appear in exhibition tournaments.

That was also the reason why Ruud chose not to appear in the South American swing competitions in February. Held on clay, those four tournaments have often been Ruud’s bread and butter in terms of earning ranking points for years now.

That coupled with his lack of form elsewhere too has meant Ruud came into this tournament knowing he might be playing on his favourite surface but hasn’t done so in nearly a year and a struggle was on the cards.

A struggle it was for sure.

The world number five had gone into his second round match here following the opening bye at 1/9 to win it but was in deep trouble when Joao Sousa claimed the first set.

Ruud’s pedigree shone through following that as he carved out a 4-6, 6-2, 6-2 victory but it does raise question-marks here – does he have it in him against a clay-court specialist like Baez?

Baez Puts Cachin Aside

It took him a while to win his first round match against Radu Albot and similarly Baez was at the receiving end of a stodgy performance from Pedro Cachin in the second round too. In the end, Baez did not drop a set but still needed two hours and 11 minutes to seal his quarterfinal berth.

In a match where a total of nine breaks of serves were on show, Baez scraped through 6-4, 7-6 (2) to set up this meeting with Ruud.

Baez was 2-0 up in the first set and while Cachin broke back in the fourth game, he managed to clinch another break of serve late in the set to go ahead. It was in the second set that things unravelled quickly.

For starters it started the same pattern with Baez going up 2-0 and then dropping his serve to level things out at 2-2. Another break of serve in the fifth game gave Cordoba Open winner the lead but Cachin broke back in the eighth game.

Two more breaks of serves followed but Baez finally took control in the tie-breaker, sailing through 7-2 in it. He will feel confident about his chances here.

Ruud v Baez Prediction and Tip

Ruud starts a 1/2 favourite and while we will have to still back him here, there’s not a lot to choose between these two. Which is why the games handicap market looks to be a good one.
