Jabeur Advances as Kalinskaya Withdraws

World no. 5 Ons Jabeur moved into the semifinals in Charleston for the third straight year after her quarterfinal opponent Anna Kalinskaya retired while trailing 0-6, 1-4 on Friday.

Jabeur was off to a flying start, bageling the Russian in the first set and she continued to dominate in the second set when Kalinskaya eventually withdrew due to an illenss.

Jabeur dropped just nine points on her serve in the match and nine on return.

The Tunisian, who was a semifinalist in 2021 and a finalist last year, improved her season record to 7-4. The second seed has not dropped a set in this year’s competition. She began with a 6-3, 6-3 victory over Ukraine’s Lesia Tsurenko in the second round and then ousted Caroline Dolehide 6-3, 7-5 in the second round.

Jabeur has been slow off the blocks this year and has also missed a few tournaments due to an injury but she seems to be back at her best in Charleston and will be aiming to reach the second straight final in the competition.

Kasatkina Rallies Past Keys

2017 champion Daria Kasatkina bounced back after dropping the first set to beat Madison Keys in the quarterfinal on Friday.

The world no. 8, who had gone into the contest with a 1-8 record against the American, closed the gap on her with a 6-7 (5-7), 6-4, 6-2 victory.

Kasatkina held 24 breaking opportunities in the match and she capitalised on 10 of them. Meanwhile, Keys held 13 break points, with the Russian saving six of them.

Kasatkina improved to 8-8 for the season. She has already featured in a final this year in Adelaide-2, but she did not win matches in a row in the subsequent tournaments. However, she is back in form in Charleston.

The 25-year-old kicked off the tournament with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Madison Brengle in the second round and then she edged out Bernarda Pera 6-3, 7-6 (7-3) in third round.

Kasatkina has a good record in Charleston. She beat Jelena Ostapenko for the title six years ago and was a quarterfinalist in 2016 and 2018. She is back in the semifinals; can she make it to another final?

Jabeur v Kasatkina Prediction and Tip

Jabeur has dominated the recent meetings between the two and is expected to continue her dominance. Kastkina won’t be easy to beat and may take the contest to the third set, but given how Jabeur is playing right now, she should edge past the Russian and reach a second final in a row in Charleston.
