Chardy Makes Return on Clay

Jeremy Chardy didn’t play for over a year before making a return earlier this year at the Australian Open. The big-serving French player missed a lot of time during the pandemic and only returned earlier this year with one match going his way and the other didn’t.

There is a reason why he picked Madrid to enter it with a protective ranking that he can use only a limited amount of time. His biggest weapon always has been the serve which is what helps you win matches in Madrid. It’s high altitude, the air is thinner and balls fly rather quickly.

He can use his serve to win matches here, more so than on any other clay court in the world. He’s never been the greatest player on that surface so any advantage he can get will be hugely beneficial for him. He hasn’t played in Melbourne so expect some rust.

Gaston is a tricky opponent and beating him will be tough. If he serves well and plays attacking tennis, he can certainly win.

Gaston Looking For Wins

Hugo Gaston traditionally plays his best tennis on clay courts and he’s up to 11 wins on that surface this year. He also has 9 losses so it’s a really balanced record so far and that’s how he largely played this year. He never found a really great rhythm but he’s been good for a few wins here and there.

Lately, it’s been rather poor as he has three consecutive losses with his most recent win coming on April 3rd in Marrakech over Jan-Lennard Stuff. Madrid is somewhat of a tricky surface for him because he’s not a player with a lot of power and you outhit him.

He is more of a finesse player and somewhat slower courts certainly favour him more than this high-altitude one where balls fly rather quickly. His serve is one thing that generally gets him in trouble because players can attack it really easily.

He’ll see Chardy try and shorten the rallies but if he can utilize his drop shot often he could force Chardy to run around which he doesn’t like to do. That’s the key to winning the match, make Chardy move.

Chardy v Gaston Prediction and Tip

Despite a lot of things benefitting Gaston I do think that Gaston is closer to winning the match. He’s younger, he’s played more and he favours clay. I could see him struggle a bit but I think he’ll get it done.
