Wang Searching for First Win on Clay

Yet to win a tour level main draw match on clay, 21-year-old Xinyu Wang will make her debut in Rome.

The Chinese player is 0-2 on clay this season. She lost in the opening round in Madrid to Jule Niemeier and then fell to Nuria Parrizas Diaz in the first round of the WTA 125 Catalonia Open last week.

OveraLl Wang is 14-12 this season and has produced pretty good results on hard courts. She was a semifinalist in Hua Hin and a quarterfinalist in Hobart. She also made it to the third round in Indian Wells in what was her best ever showing at a WTA 1000 tournament so far.

A six-time champion from 11 finals at the ITF tour, Wang has won just one title on clay, having reached three finals on the surface.

Wang will be looking to win her first main draw match on clay when she plays the opening round match on Tuesday.

Form a Concern for Paolini

Jasmine Paolini has not got going yet in 2023. The Italian last won a tour level main draw match in Lyon in February, when she beat Erika Andreeva to reach the quarterfinals. But a straight sets defeat to Carloine Garcia began her slide. Since then she has registered just two wins, one in an ITF tournament and the other at the WTA 125 Catalonia Open.

But in the main draws at the tour level, she made first round exits from Dubai, Indian Wells, Miami and Madrid.

Overall, Paolini is 7-12 this season and 2-3 on clay, across levels.

Paolini would be hoping to regain form on clay, which has proven to be a productive surface for her over her career. Although she hasn’t had a lot of success in Rome, where a second round finish in 2020 remains her best in the previous three appearances. But overall she tends to do well on the surface. The 27-year-old has won seven of her nine ITF titles on clay. She also reached both her Challenger finals on clay, winning one of those in Bol, Croatia in 2021.

At the tour level, Paolini has reached two finals over her career but both on hard courts, winning the title in Slovenia in 2021 and finishing runner-up in Transylvania Open last year.

Wang v Paolini Prediction and Tip

While Wang has produced far better results than Paolini this year, the Italian is the superior player on clay. She did well last year as well and will be looking to get going in Rome.

Tips:

  • Low Risk Tip: Paolini to win: 4/5
  • Moderate Risk Tip: Over 21.5 games in the match: 5/6
