Halys Exits Early in Madrid and Aix
Quentin Halys hasn’t played that well this year, and certainly a good amount below the level he had at times earlier this year. His Estoril Open run was some of the most impressive tennis a player showed this year.
Generally, Halys prefers a court where he can utilize his serving and clay courts are not that. Even so, he’s able to produce some good shots from the baseline which allows him to play on all surfaces. The exit in Madrid came particularly as a surprise because it’s the one court that plays extremely well into his strengths.
He did face a tough player in Bautista Agut and took him to three sets so in essence the outing was rather fair. Aix was a different story as he produced a rather lacklustre level against Fils losing in three sets. It’s been the story of his year so far.
Quite up and down with an overall 18-16 record. He played far better at times than the record would suggest but also quite poor at times. This is the first time he is playing in Rome.

Wolf Struggles on Clay
As many American players, J.J. Wolf struggles on clay. His only two wins on the surface this year came in Houston which plays quite a bit faster than regular European clay. His experience in Madrid wasn’t that fun either even if the conditions suited the way he plays.
He wasn’t able to do much and lost in two simple sets. Rome will be even tougher for the American who has never bothered to try and learn how to play on this surface but he will have to if he wants to become a respectable tennis player.
The record asides from that has been pretty fair at 11-9 though nothing to write home about. He’ll struggle greatly with the slower conditions and even though I think he’s no worse of a player than Halys.
His inexperience on the surface (only 21 matches overall) will come back to bite him, especially against a player who has looked pretty decent on clay this year.
Halys v Wolf Prediction and Tip
Halys seems to be the player who has more experience on clay and I’m going to side with him simply because of that. Neither is playing well on it right now but I’ll trust Halys due to the experience.
Tips:
- Moderate Risk Tip: Halys to win the match: 1/2
