Murray Finds Form Ahead of Rome
Former world no. 1 Andy Murray has found form just ahead of the Rome Masters as he picked up his third Challenger title on Sunday by beating Tommy Paul in the final of the Aix En Provence Challenger.
Murray who has barely played in Challenger tournaments over his career, came back from a set down to oust the American in the title clash.
The title success would be a huge confidence booster for the Scot, who lost in the opening rounds in Monte-Carlo and Madrid. In fact the 35-year-old had arrived in Aix En Provence on the back of four consecutive defeats, which included a third round defeat in Indian Wells and another opening round defeat in Miami.
Murray is however 8-7 on the tour this year, largely thanks to his performance in Doha where he finished runner-up to Daniil Medvedev.
A three-time Grand Slam champion, Murray has 46 titles to his name and three of those have come on clay. He is 14-10 in Rome and had won the title in 2016 by beating Novak Djokovic in the final. He has not played in Rome since 2017. Can he make a winning return?

Fognini Is 2-8 in 2023
Facing Murray in the opener will be Italy’s Fabio Fognini. The 35-year-old has been handed a wild card for the tournament.
This will be the 16th time when Fognini will be playing in the main draw in Rome. He however doesn’t have a great record in his home Masters, having reached the quarterfinals just once and that was in 2018.
Fognini’s current form is a cause of concern as well. He has won just two matches this year. Those two wins came over Marcelo Tomas Barrios Vera in Rio and Alessandro Giannessi in Estoril. Fognini has not played since his second round defeat to Marco Cecchinato in Estoril.
With an overall record of 2-8 this season, the Italian will be a bit low in confidence and it will be a huge ask for him to take down Murray in the opener.
Murray v Fognini Prediction and Tip
Murray is in excellent form right now, while Fognini has struggled. Expect the former to ease past the Italain and sail into the second round for a meeting with 30th seed Miomir Kecmanovic, who has a first round bye.
Tips:
- Low Risk Tip: Murray to win: 2/5
- Moderate Risk Tip: Under 22.5 games in the match: 5/6
