Jannik Sinner v Francisco Cerundolo Head to Head

There have been three previous meetings between these two and Sinner leads 2-1 including one win at the Davis Cup last year. No previous matches have come on clay though.

Sinner Stretched by Shevchenko

Sinner might have been feeling a tad ginger because of the lack of tennis since his withdrawal from the Barcelona Open and the subsequent no-show in Madrid because of his illness. Because he didn’t look his best in his third round win over Alexander Shevchenko.

In the end, the eighth seeded Sinner reached the fourth round in Rome by edging out Russian lucky loser Shevchenko 6-3, 6-7 (4), 6-2.

Having earlier not faced any difficulties in his 6-1, 6-4 rout of Thanasi Kokkinakis, Sinner looked to be headed to an easy win when he broke Shevchenko thrice in the first set.

Shevchenko stunned Sinner by grabbing the early break of serve and then serving for the set at 5-4. And while the Russian failed to do so, he overcame a 0-2 definit in the tie-breaker to win it.

That’s where Shevchenko’s fight ended though as Sinner rattled off four games in a row in the final set to end the encounter.

He will now hope he can continue this run on clay which has seen him win seven of the eight matches he’s played on it.

Cerundolo Overturns First Loss against Barrere

After having suffered an opening loss at the Madrid Masters, Cerundolo’s fighting spirit is coming to the fore with his second successive three-set win coming from behind.

Cerundolo had earlier defeated Wu Yibing after being down a set, and in his third round encounter against Gregoire Barrere, he lost the opening set in a tie-breaker this time before having to mount a comeback win.

The Argentine overcame Barrere 6-7 (0), 6-2, 6-2 in a match lasting two hours and nine minutes, and this was despite Cerundolo facing 10 break-points in the encounter. Barrere managed to break just once while losing his over serve a whopping five times which made all the difference between the two players.

Interesting to note here that Cerundolo is a clay-court specialist but his record on clay for the season hasn’t looked the brightest. He was 7-7 on win-loss before the start of this tournament and these two struggling wins have not done too much to change the rhythm.

Sinner v Cerundolo Prediction and Tip

Sinner is a huge favourite but Cerundolo has shown to be a fighter and we could see a keen tussle for a while before the Italian grabs the win.

Tips:

  • Low Risk Tip: Under 9.5 games in the first set: 4/9
  • Moderate Risk Tip: Under 19.5 games in the match: 8/11
