Dominic Thiem v Gael Monfils Head to Head
The two men have met four times before, and, to date, Thiem has a perfect record, winning on every occasion. Whilst two of those wins came on Thiem’s favourite surface of clay, he also beat his opponent of today on the hard courts of London in 2016, and, perhaps, most significantly, in this very same tournament, two years ago.
Thiem, Eyeing the Final after Some Rotten Form
Thiem must now believe he has an excellent chance of reaching the final this week, the way his side of the draw has opened up. Seeded seventh for the tournament, and placed in the top half of the draw, he has seen both Novak Djokovic and Alexander Zverev disappear from the tournement early. This means that he is now the top ranked player left in his part of the draw.
He is in good form as well, knocking out Jordan Thompson in the first round, before cruising past Gilles Simon of France in his next match. Then on Wednesday he brought to an end the unlikely run of 40-yer old Ivo Karlovic in this year’s event.
Given his excellent track record against Monfils, he will be fully confident of reaching the semi-final, and beyond.
Monfils, First Masters Quarter-Final in Three Years
This is Monfils’ first Masters Quarter-Final, since Canada three years ago, and is further affirmation that he is putting the injury problems of last year behind him.
After struggling to beat Leonardo Mayer in his first round match here, he comfortably beat Spain’s Albert Ramos-Vinolas in the second round, before thrashing Germany’s Philipp Kohlschreiber – who had put out Novak Djokovic in his previous match – on Wednesday.
If he can get past Thiem he will make his fourth semi-final of the season, but, given their head-to-head record, it is a big ask.
Thiem v Monfils Predictions & Tips
Thiem is odds-on favourite with the bookmakers at 11/25, whilst Monfils is priced at 7/4. Monfils is playing well this year and is getting back to his best, but, when it comes to head-to-head matches, Thiem just seems to have his number.
Tip: Thiem to win: 5/4 (Betfair)
