Ekaterina Alexandrova v Anna-Lena Friedsam Head to Head

There have been two previous meetings between them at the highest level and both were won by Friedsam.

Alexandrova Taken to Three by Tomova

Having had a solid previous season which saw her win a couple of WTA titles and a semifinal appearance at the Madrid Open as a qualifier, Alexandrova hasn’t quite been able to replicate that kind of form this year.

Sure there have been a few results that have gone her way which includes the third round at Australian Open, a quarterfinal in Miami and more recently another fourth round appearance in Madrid but she hasn’t been able to do too much more.

Even on clay, which isn’t Alexandrova’s most preferred surface, she had won just four of the eight matches she played this season.

So while she did start off a heavy favourite (3/10) against Viktoriya Tomova in her opener, there might have been a few niggling doubts about that. And that’s exactly how things turned out as Alexandrova needed to ward off a poor second set from her to come back and win in three.

22 of her 38 unforced errors came in that second set alone and she was broken thrice as a result of that.

The good news for the Russian was that on either side of that debacle, she crushed her opponent 6-1, 6-1 to win her opener.

Friedsam Scrapes Past Hibino

Such have been Friedsam’s form struggles, that in the five tournaments she had played on clay before the French Open this season, she had won just one match.

Incidentally that had been a 6-0, 6-0 thrashing of Shuai Zhang but while one thought that it might have given her some confidence boost, she was beaten in the very next round there by Anna Blinkova.

Fortunately for Friedsam, she was drawn to face lucky loser and 113rd-ranked Nao Hibino in the first round – a player not in the best of recent form. Add that to the fact that Hibino’s overall career record on clay is a measely 43-48 across all levels of tennis, Friedsam would have given herself a good chance here.

She did make it through but not before she had been taken to three sets, winning 6-3, 3-6, 6-4. In fact this could well have gone the other way too as Hibino broke Friedsam twice to take a 3-0 lead in the first set before losing momentum and allowing her opponent back into the contest.

Against Alexandrova she will need to do a lot better than hit 47 unforced errors and lose her serve four times.

Alexandrova v Friedsam Prediction and Tip

Alexandrova shouldn’t have a lot of worries here despite her own form. Expecting a straight-set victory for the Russian.

Tips:

  • Low Risk Tip: Under 21.5 games in the match: 4/5
  • Moderate Risk Tip: Alexandrova to win in straight sets: 10/11
