Liu Struggling In 2023

Claire Liu has struggled to win matches on a regular basis in 2023. While last year she found success, particularly on clay, she has just not got going this year.

Liu is 14-19 across levels in 2023 and things may have just started to turn around for her as she made it to her first quarterfinal of the season in the WTA 125 in Bastad this week.

Liu’s best at the tour level came in Miami, where she made it to the third round. It was the first time that she made it that far in a WTA 1000 tournament.

Liu also reached the second rounds in Adelaide, Australian and the French Opens.

Last year Liu had reached her maiden WTA final in Rabat, but finished runner-up to Martina Trevisan. She also claimed her first WTA 125 final, beating Beatriz Haddad Maia in straight sets. Both of those tournaments were clay court events. She is a decent player on clay and will look to get her Hungarian Open debut off to a fine start.

Chirico Comes Through Qualifiers

Louisa Chirico has been playing well recently and she made it to the main draw of the Budapest Open with back-to-back straight set wins in the qualifying rounds.

Ranked no 251st the world, the American defeated France’s Amandine Hesse 6-1, 6-1 in the first qualifying round on Saturday and then ousted Jana Fett of Croatia 7-6, 6-1 in the second qualifying round on Sunday.

Against Fett, Chirico saved five set points in the opening set before running away with the tiebreak. She however got better in the second set, racing to a straight sets win.

Chirico’s recent form has been very good. She reached the semifinals in the WTA 125 in Bastad by beating Claire Liu in the quarterfinal.

She was also a semifinalist in ITF Boca Raton and a quarterfinalist in three other ITF tournaments, all on clay. Overall, Chirico has a 21-17 record across levels this year and she is 19-13 on clay.

Liu v Chirico Prediction and Tip

Only four days after going down to Chirico in the Swedish Open, Liu has an opportunity to get her revenge. But given the current form of the two players, the lower ranked Chirico could pull off a surprise once again. Expect this to be a close contest with a good chance of Chirico surprising the higher ranked player again.

Tips:

  • Moderate Risk Tip: Chirico to win: 1/1
  • Moderate Risk Tip: Over 24.5 games in the match: 5/6
