This is the first match at the highest level and the second overall meeting between these two players with Broady having defeated Thompson on the Futures Tour in 2014.

For a player whose grass swing had begun with a semifinal appearance at the Surbiton Challenger and a runner-up trophy at the Rosmalen Open where he lost to Tallon Griekspoor in the final, Thompson has continued to consistency throughout the rest of the season.
He made the second round at Queen’s, Mallorca and Wimbledon before doing the same here in Newport.
And the manner in which Thompson won his opener here will give him a lot of confidence for the matches to come. He demolished Aleksandar Kovacevic in a matter of an hour and six minutes in which the Aussie dropped a mere one game to advance to the second round.
The world number 69 lost his serve once – that was the only game he lost in the match – while breaking Kovacevic a whopping six times in the match.
He now faces another player who likes playing on grass but is more than 60 places behind him in the rankings.

Broady Eases Past Mochizuki
Shintaro Mochizuki has done well on the lower circuits and is currently on a career-high ranking of 192nd in the world thanks to his qualification to the main draw at Wimbledon. He made the main draw here as a result of that showing and it did look like he could give Broady a bit of a run for his money.
Broady, however, was coming off a third round appearance at Wimbledon. That was his best ever performance at a Grand Slam by some distance and the confidence was there.
And that could be seen in his opening round win over Mochizuki as well.
The Brit was on court for an hour and 19 minutes, winning 6-1, 7-5 and it could have been a lot easier too after he had taken a 2-0 lead in the second set. Very soon he had a chance to break Mochizuki for a 5-2 lead but the Japanese player saved that and broke Broady.
Just when it looked like a tie-breaker was on the cards, Broady broke again in the 11th game and then clinched the match by serving it out in the very next game.

Broady might have had a good run on grass so far but this is where it ends for him this season with Thompson expected to come through. Might be a bit of a fight though.
