Having not had a great time in the grass tournaments this season leading up to the Newport Open, Humbert would have been slightly relieved to have reached the semifinal in that competition.
Humbert overcame Steve Johnson and Kevin Anderson following a first round bye to enter the last four stage before he was knocked out by the eventual winner Adrian Mannarino.
The Frenchman has done his bit in hardcourt competitions over the years which includes a couple of title wins too. However, this season has been lesser kind than usual for him. Over the 10 matches he’s played in such tournaments, he’s won just five which includes third round appearances at the Australian Open and the Indian Wells Masters.
His last time in this tournament came in 2019 where he made the second round and lost to Miomir Kecmanovic.
Humbert would like to do better than that this time, and he would definitely like to better his record in hardcourt competitions this season.

Lestienne’s Struggles Almost Unparalled
For someone who has played in as many main draws of as many tournaments that Lestienne has done this year, it’s hard to find someone else with this kind of an underwhelming record that he has this season.
Lestienne looked to have begun the season well when he made the semifinal of the Auckland Open but once he withdrew from that match against Richard Gasquet things have gone south for him.
The once 48th-ranked player has fallen to 95th in the world and that has been down to his string of defeats since Auckland. In fact, his only win in the main draw of a top-level tournament since making the second round at the Australian Open came at Mallorca in the last week of June.
That’s five months and 11 tournaments without a victory.
And he here he returns to hardcourt surfaces following his equally poor run on grass to take on a player who might not be in the best of form but a definite favourite here.
