Evans Returns after Opening Wimbledon Defeat

Third seeded Evans earned himself an opening round bye here and will directly play in the second round, having not featured in any tennis since losing in the first round at Wimbledon.

What Evans would hope is for is the three-week break since that defeat at the hands of Quentin Halys would have given him time to recharge his batteries, both physically and mentally.

Because it’s not been the kind of season that Evans would have liked. He has barely won any matches, entering this tournament on the back of a win-loss of 8-17 for the season. Only three of those wins have come in hardcourt competitions which is rather poor going for a player who is ranked 30th in the world.

Evans now faces an who is known for his play on clay but is coming off a stunning victory over John Isner despite starting out a 6/4 underdog in that encounter.

Koepfer Shocks Isner

Before the start of this tournament, Koepfer had played in eight matches outside of clay all season and across circuits and won just three. None of those wins had come in the main draws of ATP tournaments at the highest level.

Which is why, despite taking on a player ranked outside the top 100 at the moment, Koepfer was a rank outsider to win it.

And when Koepfer lost the first set of the match, it looked like it was headed to the script too.

Except that Koepfer did wonderfully well after that to hold on to his serve with remarkable ease across both the remaining two sets. The world number 88 lost just 13 points on his own serve in those two sets and when it came to the tie-breaker, he managed to make his way past the tie-breaker expert Isner.

It’s this confidence that should hold him in a good stead coming into this second round match against an out-of-sorts Evans.

Evans v Koepfer Prediction and Tip

While Evans is a favourite the fact that he is starting out only at 4/5 gives you an idea about what the bookmakers think despite a difference of nearly 60 places on the rankings charts between them. Backing Evans to find his touch here and come through.
