Sabalenka has been a late bloomer, having never played in any Grand Slams at the junior level but went on to do reasonably well at the lower-level competition on the ITF level. In 2015, she won three of those titles, and followed it up with two more in 2016.

In 2017, Sabalenka added a WTA $125k victory by winning the Mumbai Open, announcing herself to the world, having earlier that year won her first ever Grand Slam main draw encounter.

A string of first round losses at the first three majors next year followed but title wins in New Haven and Wuhan meant there were renewed hopes of her talent shining through. And it did at the 2018 US Open where Sabalenka entered as the 26th seed and stunned Petra Kvitova (check her racquet specifications here) in the third round of the tournament.

Later she lost a tough three-setter to Naomi Osaka, who would go on to win the title – that would be the only set the Japanese player lost in the entire tournament.

With Sabalenka’s confidence restored, she had a mixed run at the Grand Slams in 2019, a third round at the Australian Open being her highlight. Interestingly, going in as the 11th seed, Sabalenka had an outside chance of becoming the world number one if she had gone on to win that title.

2019 also saw her pick up three more titles, including her successful defence of the Wuhan Open and the WTA Elite Trophy. Interestingly, Sabalenka showed she had more strings to her bow when she won the women’s doubles title at the 2019 US Open with Elise Mertens as her partner. She also made the French Open doubles semis and Wimbledon quarterfinal.

Sabalenka’s game revolves around her power and aggression and she is at her best from the baseline. While playing against Sabalenka one can expect a string of scorching winners and stunning unforced errors as a result, but over the last few years she has evolved into a much better player after starting to pick her moments to hit those winners.

The Belarusian’s favourite surface is hard-court and grass, having won just one match at the French Open.
