What Happened at the 2022 ATP Qatar Open?

Spain’s Roberto Bautista Agut was the 2022 Qatar Open winner when he overcame the defending champion Nikoloz Basilashvili in the final. He won 6-3, 6-4 to avenge the previous year’s final’s defeat to the same player.

This was after Bautista Agut had overturned Karen Khachanov and Basilashvili defeated Arthur Rinderknech in their respective semifinals to reach the title-decider. It was also Bautista-Agut’s second tournament win in Doha.

The 2021 edition of the competition was won by Nikoloz Basilashvili, who defeated Roberto Bautista Agut in the title-decider. The Georgian number one was a 7-6 (5), 6-2 winner in the final.

22-year-old Andrey Rublev defeated qualifier Corentin Moutet 6-2, 7-6 (7-3) to win the Qatar Open in 2020 and push himself through to the top-20 for the first time in his career.

Rublev sailed through to the finals defeating Mikhail Kukushkin, Pierre-Hugues Herbert and Miomir Kecmanovic without dropping a single set.

The French youngster, who stunned the world defeating seasoned players like Tennys Sandgren, Milos Raonic, Fernando Verdasco and most shockingly three-time Grand Slam winner Stan Wawrinka in the semifinals 3-6, 7-5, 6-3, will break the top 75 for the first time in his career with his first career finals leaving Moutet with a victory despite a loss.

Roberto Bautista Agut recorded a fine title triumph at the 2019 Qatar Open, beating wild-card entrant Tomas Berdych in the final.

This was after he registered a shock win over Djokovic in the semi-final, coming back from being a set down to complete the victory in three sets. Berdych was a 7-6, 6-3 winner over Marco Cecchinato.

Djokovic, incidentally, did not have a great tournament either after his opening win over Damir Dzhumhur. He was stretched to three sets in each of his next two rounds by Marton Fucsovics and Nikoloz Bashilashvili before he went down to Bautista-Agut. Incidentally, Bautista-Agut had earlier defeated Stan Wawrinka in the quarter-finals as well.

Gael Monfils, who won the title in 2018 by beating Andrey Rublev in the final in straight sets, opted not to participate in the 2019 edition.

In 2018, Dominic Thiem was the top seed and he managed to make it to the semi-final before withdrawing because of illness, awarding the match to Monfils. The other finalist, Rublev, defeated Guido Pella in the semi-final.

Among the other players who took part in the Qatar Open last year included Tomas Berdych, Albert Ramos Vinolas, Richard Gasquet, Filip Krajinovic, Fernando Verdasco and Feliciano Lopez.
