Till 2019, viewers in India were able to watch the live streaming of the Australian Open from the official website. However, this will be discontinued from the 2024 edition of the competition. Indian tennis fans will now be able to watch the Australian Open live streaming on the official SonyLIV app along with at least two English TV channels on the Sony-ESPN network.

Ball to ball commentary of tennis action from the Rod Laver Arena and other courts was available throughout the tournament. Action started at 10.45 am daily in Australia.

It was Rafael Nadal who won the 2022 edition of the Australian Open on the men’s singles side of things as he overcame a two-set deficit in the final to overpower Daniil Medvedev. Ash Barty dismissed Danielle Collins in the women’s singles final to clinch another Grand Slam tournament win.
Novak Djokovic and Naomi Osaka won the men’s and women’s singles titles in 2021 at Australian Open.
Sofia Kenin and Novak Djokovic were the women’s and men’s singles winners at the 2020 edition of the Australian Open. Kenin, who had walked into the competition with some excellent form from the previous season, defeated the much-favoured Garbine Muguruza in the title decider, while Djokovic got past Dominic Thiem to carve out his 17th Grand Slam win.
Thiem had earlier gotten past Rafael Nadal in the quarterfinal, before overcoming Alexander Zverev in the semifinal – he would later beat Zverev in the final of the US Open as well – while Djokovic overcame Roger Federer in the last four.
Kenin’s title win consisted of a shock victory over the top seeded Ash Barty, while Muguruza defeated Simona Halep in the semifinal.
Naomi Osaka won her second successive Grand Slam title by clinching the 2019 Australian Open women’s singles title. She defeated Petra Kvitova in the final to retain her position at the top of the WTA Rankings.
The men’s singles title was won by Novak Djokovic, making it three Grand Slam titles in a row. It was not just his win but the manner of win that would have put a feeling of fear against him, with Djokovic taming Rafael Nadal in straight sets in the final.
The Osaka-Kvitova encounter was a closer, top notch match. Osaka needed a first set tie-breaker to win it before Kvitova came back to level the match at a set apiece. In the final set, there were plenty of close battles and tight rallies but Osaka came through 7-6, 5-7, 6-4 to lift the trophy.
Serena Williams was one of the quarter-finalist and blew a 5-1 lead in the final set to go down to Karolina Pliskova. Pliskova later lost her semi-final to Osaka. Kvitova make it to the final by cruising past Ash Barty in the quarter-final and then having no trouble beating Danielle Collins in the semi-final.
Defending champion Caroline Wozniacki fell in the third round, while the runner-up from previous season, Simona Halep and the second seeded Angelique Kerber were both sent packing in the fourth.
Djokovic’s path to the final was easier despite dropping a set apiece to Denis Shapovalov and Daniil Medvedev en route the quarter-final. There on, he achieved different levels of pedigree. He was leading Kei Nishikori 6-1, 4-1 in the quarter-final before the Japanese player retired because of any injury while while Lucas Pouille 6-0, 6-2, 6-2 to enter the final.
Nadal didn’t drop a set till he reached the final, even defeating Stefanos Tsitsipas en route in straight sets. Tsitsipas had earlier shown his awesome quality to overturn a set deficit against Roger Federer in the fourth round.
Earlier, in the 2018 Australian Open, Caroline Wozniacki and Roger Federer won the women’s and men’s singles titles apiece at the previous Australian Open, after winning hard-fought finals respectively.
Danish Wozniacki, who had achieved the world number one ranking some years ago, won her first ever Grand Slam title after being pushed to three sets by Simona Halep. Halep would later go on to win a title of her own at the French Open in 2018. Wozniacki won 7-6, 3-6, 6-4.
In the semi-finals, the Australian Open winner defeated Elise Mertens while Halep overcame Angelique Kerber to make it to the title-decider.
The others to make it to quarter-finals included fourth seeded Elina Svitolina, sixth seeded Karolina Pliskova, Madison Keys and Carla Suarez Navarro, all of whom went out in that round. Serena Williams had opted out of the competition after having only recently delivered her first child.
Federer, who was the men’s singles defending champion, did not have Novak Djokovic or Rafael Nadal in the competition because of their earlier ousters. He was, however, stretched to five sets by Marin Cilic before he lifted his 20th Grand Slam title.
It was Cilic who had sent out top seeded Rafael Nadal in the last-eight thanks to the latter’s injury issues, that would come back to haunt him throughout the year. Djokovic was sent crashing in the fourth round.
The other quarter-finalists included third seeded Grigor Dimitrov, Kyle Edmund, Tennys Sandgren and Chung Hyeon.

About the Australian Open Tennis Tournament
The Australian Open, also called the Happy Slam, is the first Grand Slam tennis tournament to be played in the calendar year and is hosted by the Melbourne Park in Melbourne. The competition was first held in 1905 and has seen the use of grass courts before shifting to the hard court surfaces.
In 1988, the first ever Australian Open was played on a hard court surface, with the green-coloured Rebound Ace used up to 2007. It then changed the surface to blue Plexicushion in 2007.
It’s three main courts are called the Rod Laver Arena, Hisense Arena and the Margaret Court Arena and all three of them possess a retractable roof, which allows the Australian Open to be played indoors during rains and extreme heat as well.
Earlier known as the Australasian Open and the Australian Championship, it acquired its current name in 1969 and is managed and organised by Tennis Australia or the Lawn Tennis Association of Australia, as it was earlier named.
Interestingly, the Australian Open has been hosted at seven different venues, including two in New Zealand. These are Melbourne, Sydney, Adelaide, Brisbane, Perth, Christchurch and Hastings.
It’s current venue, the Melbourne Park, first hosted the tournament in 1988.
More recently, the state of New South Wales had stated they were looking to host the Australian Open after Melbourne’s rights expired in 2016 but this was met with a stinging criticism by Melbourne.
In the end, a revamp of the Melbourne Park meant that the Australian Open will continue to be played in the city till 2036 at the very least.
In 1998, the Australian Open organisers introduced a heat policy that allowed play to be stopped when the temperatures reached a certain levels. However, this was allowed only for matches played at the quarter-final stage or beyond.
Initially this was set at 39 degree centigrade or at the match referee’s discretion beyond 35 degrees centigrade, and the rule was first used in 1997.
This rule was tweaked in 1998 to allow all matches to stop once the temperatures touched 40 degree centigrade, and this threshold was brought down to 38 degree centigrade in 2002.
At different times since then, the policy has been changed and the threshold temperatures have been tweaked to adjust to the changing global weather.
The total prize money given out at the Australian Open is AUS $50 million with the singles winners taking home a whopping $3.7 million apiece. Doubles winning teams take home $650,000 while the mixed doubles winners pocket $165,000 for the team during the tournament.
Other competitions include the wheelchair, legends and exhibition matches along with the junior boys and girls competitions.
Novak Djokovic has won the men’s singles title seven times at the Australian Open in the Open Arena, while Serena Williams’ seven titles makes her the recipient of the most women’s singles titles at the competition.
The Bryan brothers have won the men’s doubles title thrice, while Martina Navratilova, partnering with different players, has triumphed on eight separate occasions in the Australian Open Women’s Doubles competition.
