Casper Ruud has a tennis pedigree about him with his father Christian Ruud having also played the sport at the highest level during the 1990s. Having begun his pro career in a Futures event in 2013, Ruud has gone from strength to strength on the ATP tour. He did not have a lot of success in the junior singles Grand Slams, and yet went on to become the number one player in the world.
Ruud continued on his Futures journey over the next two years before bagging his first title in 2016. He made it two more trophies, one on the Futures circuit and then bagging his maiden Challenger competition win at Sevilla. It was also a year which he ended on a 56-19 win-loss record.

Drawn to meet another qualifier, Ruud needed a fifth set 11-9 to edge out Quentin Halys before he lost to Diego Schwartzman in the second. Another five-set opening round win at the French Open followed and while he didn’t make the Wimbledon main draw and lost in the opener at the US Open, his ranking was on the ascent.
So much so he got a direct entry at the French Open in 2019 where he stunned Ernests Gulbis in the first round and then created an upset by beating the 29th seeded Matteo Berrettini (check Berrettini’s racquet specs here) in the second, before he lost to Roger Federer.
And then by winning the 2020 Argentina Open, Ruud became first Norwegian player to lift an ATP singles title, beating his father’s record of having made a final but never won a competition.
Ruud loves playing on clay, having won all his first four titles on that surface and delivered his best major performance at the French Open too. While Nick Kyrgios has called Ruud’s playing style boring, it’s worth noting Ruud’s rise in the world of tennis and he could well be one of the players to watch.
