Ekaterina Alexandrova v Garbine Muguruza Head to Head

This will be the second meeting between the two. Muguruza won their only previous encounter at the Wimbledon in 2017. The Spaniard had begun that tournament with a 6-2, 6-4 win over Alexandrova before going all the way to capture her second Grand Slam title.

Alexandrova Holds Nerves Against Wang

Fifth seed Ekaterina Alexandrova of Russia showed nerves of steel as she rallied from a set down to knockout fourth seed Wang Qiang in the quarterfinals in Shenzhen on Thursday.

The Chinese No. 1 started off well taking the first set 6-3 and going up 2-0 in the second. But just when it seemed the home favourite was in control, the World No. 34 staged a remarkable comeback with her powerful groundstrokes.

She took the second 6-4 before battling to take the third 6-3 and eliminating the last remaining local hope from the competition. The gruelling tussle that lasted 2 hours and 8 minutes, saw 13 breaks of serve with the Russian winning one more than the Chinese.

Alexandrova started the campaign with a 6-4, 6-4 win over Katerina Siniakova and defeated another Chinese player Shuai Peng 7-6, 6-1 in the round of 16.

The Russian, who ended 2019 with a WTA 125K title at Limoges, will be looking to reach her second WTA Tour final on Friday. Her previous final appearance came in Linz in 2018, which she lost to Camila Giorgi.

But standing between her and a spot in the final will be the former No. 1 and two-time Grand Slam champion Muguruza.

Muguruza Digs Deep to Beat Diyas

World No. 35 Muguruza stayed on course for her first WTA Tour final since her Monterrey Open success in April last year after she edged past plucky Kazkh Zarina Diyas in an exhausting quarterfinal that lasted just over two hours on Thursday.

In the process she also ended Diyas’ seven match win streak in 2020.

The Spaniard got off to a good start taking the first set before Diyas came back in the contest forcing the decider which was eventually won by the big-serving Muguruza, who hit 13 aces during her 6-4, 2-6, 6-4 win.

On Wednesday, Muguruza hit 10 aces against American Shelby Rogers and had 8 in the opener against Xin Yu Wang on Tuesday. And it could be this big serving ability that could give her the edge against the Russian in the semifinal.

Ekaterina Alexandrova v Garbine Muguruza Predictions and Tips

It’s a matchup between the fifth seed and the sixth; the world No. 34 vs the world No. 35; both have endured tough three-set quarterfinals; both have shown great ball-striking ability from the baseline and the knack of winning important moments in a match.

So there is very little to choose between the two. However, given Muguruza’s experience she should win this in three.

Tip: Muguruza to win in three sets: 10/3 (Click here to get these odds with Unibet)
