This tournament was earlier called the German Open Tennis Championships and has been around since 1892, making it one of the oldest tournaments in the world. Between 1892 and 1981, this was a men’s-only tournament before the competition was played on the WTA circuit too.

The WTA Hamburg was played between 1982 and 2002 with a gap of three years between 1984 and 1986 when it wasn’t held. It returned on the women’s circuit in 2021.

The men’s winner here will be awarded with 500 ranking points while the women’s competition is played as a part of the WTA 250 series.

As a tennis fan, you simply cannot afford to miss this outdoor, clay-court tournament. It is one of the 13 ATP 500 series tournaments on the circuit and typically it pretty much wraps up the action on the European front before moving on to the US Open swing.

It takes place at the Am Rothenbaum arena in Hamburg and will feature many promising stars on the men’s and women’s circuit.

The upcoming edition will be the 114th version of the tournament, making it one of the oldest tennis events in Germany. The likes of Rafael Nadal, Florian Mayer, Leonardo Mayer, Gilles Simon, Fabio Fognini, Roger Federer, David Ferrer, and others have participated in the competition.

For the 2023 ATP Hamburg too, the action promises to live up to the hype.

2023 Hamburg Open Schedule & Dates

This year’s Hamburg Open will be played on both, the men’s and women’s circuit.

The qualifiers for both these events start off from the previous Saturday and the final will be held on Sunday, July 30.

What Happened at the 2022 ATP Hamburg Open?

Unseeded Italian Lorenzo Musetti won the men’s singles title at the 2022 Hamburg Open by stunning the top seeded Carlos Alcaraz in the final. Musetti won 6-4, 6-7 (6), 6-4 to lift the trophy, having not faced a single seeded player in the tournament before the title-decider.

Musetti had earlier overcome Dusan Lajovic, Emil Ruusuvuori, Alejandro Davidovich Fokina and Francisco Cerundolo in the tournament to make it that far.

The women’s singles title was won by American unseeded Bernarda Pera. Pera shocked the top seeded Anett Kontaveit in the final, 6-2, 6-4.

In what turned out to be a stunning run for Pera, she did not drop a single set in the entire competition, and lost just 22 games spread across the five matches she won.

In the absence of the defending champion Rublev, it was Spain’s Pablo Carreno Busta who lifted the trophy in Hamburg in 2021 on the men’s side while the women’s title was won by Romanian qualifier Elena Gabriela Ruse.

It was an easy, straight-set win for Carreno Busta, who bested Flip Krajinovic 6-2, 6-4 while Ruse, who had earlier stunned the top seeded Dayana Yastremska, went on to overcome Germany’s Andrea Petkovic.

Andrey Rublev’s form in 2020 was rather exemplary and one of the tournaments he won was the Hamburg Open. In a tense three-setter final, Rublev overcame the second seeded Stefanos Tsitsitpas to lift the trophy.

Rublev had earlier defeated Roberto Bautista-Agut and Casper Ruud in the previous rounds as well, while Tsitsipas needed to come through against Cristian Garin in the semifinal.

The top and third seeds, Daniil Medvedev and Gael Monfils were both knocked out in the first round of the tournament.

Nikoloz Basilashvili made it two titles in a row in 2019 when he defeated Andrey Rublev in the final in a gritty three-setter. He took the match 7-5, 4-6, 6-3 to lift the trophy. Basilashvili, seeded fourth in the competition had a tough draw which needed him to overcome Alexander Zverev to make it to the final and he did so despite being a few match-points down.

In the other semifinal, Rublev overcame Pablo Carreno Busta to make it to the final. Rublev had earlier stunned the top seeded Dominic Thiem in the quarterfinals in two tie-breakers and Busta had edged out Fabio Fognini.

Basilashvili of Georgia won his maiden title on the ATP Tour in the 2018 Hamburg Open, defeating Leonardo Mayer – the defending champion – in the final with 4-6, 6-0, 5-7.

Interestingly, Basilashvili started his journey as a qualifier and first defeated the number five seed Philipp Kohlschreiber. After that, he knocked out Pablo Cuevas ad Pablo Carreno Busta before moving past Nicolas Jarry in the semifinal. The Georgian had a couple of three-setters but managed to navigate them with finesse and maturity.

Among the top seeds, we had Alexander Zverev and Diego Schwartzman, both of them fell in the third round in an unexpected defeat. As for the runner-up Mayer, he enjoyed a particularly good run as well, moving past Gael Monfils, Schwartzman, and Jozef Kovalik on the way to the final.
