Serena Williams v Elise Mertens Head to Head

This is the first meeting between the two players on the circuit.

Williams Back in Action

So far this season, Serena Williams has been relatively quiet on the tour, mainly on account of her knee injury. With a win-loss record of 15-4, the 37-year-old hasn’t been as active as she would like to be.

Following her third-round exit at the Indian Wells, where she retired against Garbine Muguruza, Williams consequently withdrew from her matches in Miami and Rome. It wasn’t until the French Open that Serena could play properly and even then, she lost in the third round.

However, being one of the most prolific players of the sport, Serena staged an awe-inspiring comeback at Wimbledon. It was nothing short of a cinematic run, where she dismantled her opponents with absolute finesse to reach the final, where she fell to Simona Halep.

Nonetheless, it was an astounding feat from the 23-time Grand Slam champion to produce such a run at this stage in her career.

Mertens, Struggling with Her Form

Elise Mertens, the 23-year-old Belgian, has shown a great deal of promise already. At one point in time, she was close to breaking into the top 10, courtesy of her brilliant run in the Qatar Open this season.

However, her form has taken a sharp dip since then. With a litany of defeats in early rounds, Mertens eventually fell to the 20th position in the rankings. Some of her best runs in this period have been her quarterfinal stint in Mallorca and a fourth-round run in the Wimbledon.

Just when she looked a bit threatening, she fell back again when she fell to Kristie Ahn in the first round of the WTA San Jose Open. As for her run in this year’s Canadian Open – a tournament where she reached the quarterfinal last season, she started off with a three-set win over Aliaksandra Sasnovich.

Williams v Mertens Prediction & Tips

This match should end in an easy win for Williams. Her performance at the SW19 was a stark warning to the others. Given that she is absolutely fit and ready to roar, it will be hard for someone as inexperienced and out of form as Mertens to stop her.

Tip: Over 16.5 games in the match. (888Sport)
