Elina Svitolina v Belinda Bencic Head to Head

Bencic holds a 2-0 lead over her Ukranian adversary, last defeating her in this year’s WTA Dubai Championships.

Bencic in With a Commanding Start

Belinda is heading into this fixture after defeating the likes of Anastasia Potapova and Julia Goerges in Toronto. The number 11 seed faced less than some difficulty against Goerges, whom she had to fight for three sets before finally winning the match 5-7, 6-3, 6-4.

It comes as no surprise to see the 22-year-old Swiss play so well in the Rogers Cup. After all, this is where she won her first big title back in 2015, defeating Simona Halep in the final. To make things more interesting, Bencic is playing in the tournament for the first time since that impeccable run.

After struggling with her form and injuries for the last couple of seasons, Bencic is once again closer to a top 10 entry. Currently ranked World No. 12, she has had a decent year where she won the WTA Dubai and later, was a finalist in the Mallorca Open.

In the process, she has defeated many big guns like Naomi Osaka, Karolina Pliskova, Halep, and Petra Kvitova, establishing her superiority on the tour. However, the current Luxembourg Open runner-up has also gone through a slump, most notably during the grass swing.

Svitolina, Facing a Tricky Opponent

Despite a series of titles already to her name, including the Canadian Open which she won back in 2017, Svitolina is likely to have a tough time against Bencic.

Not only is she at a psychological disadvantage, but her playing time this season hasn’t been as much as that of the Swiss, mainly on account of her knee pain. The number 6 seed was forced to spend some time off the tour as a result – a trait that led to the consequent drop in her form.

But at the same time, not all has been dark for the reigning WTA Finals champion. She reached her maiden Grand Slam semifinal in Wimbledon and also had a good run in the Australian Open. As for her run in Toronto so far, she enjoyed a bye into the second round and started with a three-setter against Katerina Siniakova.

Svitolina v Bencic Prediction & Tips

While this is a match that can go either way, something tells me that Bencic will get this one in three sets. She looks a lot more determined has far more momentum than Svitolina, when considering the last few weeks. Plus, with a 2-0 lead her already, the Swiss is at a distinct advantage.

Tip: Three sets in the match. (888Sport)
