What is the Mutua Madrid Open Virtual Pro?
As the name suggests, the Mutua Madrid Open Virtual Pro is a proposed video game which will be played by some of the top ATP and WTA players from their respective homes. In short, it’s an esports tournament of tennis organised by the Madrid Open, or the Madrid Open esports competition.
According to a media release by the official Madrid Open website, the players will exchange their tennis racquets for gaming consoles and fight out some of the others from their homes with some of the proceeds of the event going to those tennis players affected by the cancellation of tennis due to the coronavirus outbreak.
If Andrea Gaudenzi, the president of ATP is to be believed, there could be a hint of more of such tournaments to follow through this season. He said:
“The Mutua Madrid Open Virtual Pro will be the first online tournament on the ATP circuit, offering players and fans alike an exciting new way to connect with our sport.”
Other than this main tournament, a charity competition will also be hosted which will see some of the tennis players teaming up with these games creators in a bid to help those affected by the outbreak of this illness.
What is the Mutua Madrid Open Virtual Pro Format?
Both men’s and women’s draw at this Madrid Open esports tournament will have 16 players participating in the competition. These 16 players will be divided into four groups of four players each and every player will play three ‘tennis’ matches.
The top two players at the end of the group stage of the competition will move into the quarterfinals from whereon the Mutua Madrid Open Virtual Pro will be a knockout tournament.
Every match will consist of one set to three games. A tie-breaker will be played at 3-3.
