Elena Rybakina and Kristyna Pliskova Head to Head

This will be the first meeting between the world number 36 Rybakina and 66th-ranked Pliskova.

Rybakina Topples Third Seed Mertens

The more she plays the better she gets, and on Thursday, Kazakhstan’s 20-year-old Elena Rybakina got another big win of her career when she defeated third seed Belgian Elise Mertens 6-4, 4-6, 6-2 in another engrossing quarterfinal at the Shenzhen Open.

The 2019 Bucharest Open champion, Rybakina will now be aiming to reach her third Tour Final having also finished runner-up at the Jiangxi Open in September last year.

The Kazakh, who reached quarterfinals or better seven times last year, has been one of the rising young stars on the Tour having improved 150 places in the rankings in 2019.

On Thursday, she showed just why she has been talked about so highly when she saw off a comeback bid from the solid Belgian to win another quarterfinal that lasted over two hours.

This was the second time in the tournament when Rybakina was tested over three sets. Earlier she had beaten China’s Zheng Saisai 6-2, 1-6, 6-2 in the first round, which lasted 1 hour and 56 minutes, before beating Yafan Wang 6-3, 6-4 in the Round of 16.

Up next for Rybakina will be Czech Kristyna Pliskova who has kicked off the New Year in great style.

Pliskova Making Short Work of Opponents

While all of the first three quarterfinals in Shenzhen lasted over two hours on Thursday, Kristyna Pliskova ensured the fourth ended quickly as she needed just 1 hour and 12 minutes to defeat Ukrainian Kateryna Bondarenko 6-4, 6-4.

Pliskova, who is aiming to reach her first final since Prague in 2017, has been in scintillating form in the tournament having won all her matches in straight sets so far.

She started the campaign with a 6-3, 6-3 win over Irina-Camelia Begu, before upsetting the No. 2 seed Aryna Sabalenka 6-4, 6-4 in the Round of 16.

The left-hander who hit 8 aces in the first round and 15 against Sabalenka, hit 16 in the quarterfinal against Bondarenko and will hope to continue serving big against Rybakina on Friday.
