Roger Federer v Filip Krajinovic Head to Head

This will be the fourth time that Federer and Krajinovic will be facing off at this level. Federer leads 3-0 on head to head with their last encounter having come at Miami last year in the third round. Krajinovic managed to take a set off Federer in Basel 2018 on indoor courts.

Federer at His Sublime Best

Having not played in any of the tournaments in the lead-up to the Australian Open, Federer was expected to be slightly rusty going into this first major of the year. However, there were no such signs as the Swiss maestro drilled past Steve Johnson 6-3, 6-2, 6-2 to make it to the second round here.

Federer managed five breaks of serves in his victory over Johnson, registering his 21st first round win at the Australian Open in the process. In addition to that, he has now won all his first round matches at Grand Slam tennis 2003. He raced off to early leads in each of the three sets and never allowed Johnson to make a comeback into the match after that.

The Swiss will hope he can overturn his performances on hard court surfaces from the second half of 2019, having crashed out of the quarterfinals at Shanghai and the US Open and lost in the third round in Cincinnati.

Krajinovic Made to Huff and Puff

The Serb lost in the second round of the Doha Open to Fernando Verdasco and came into the Australian Open as an overwhelming favourite to get past 23-year-old Frenchman Quentin Halys. He was 1/4 to win the match and while Krajinovic was taken to two tie-breakers in the first two sets, he won them both and looked like he was sitting pretty to make it to the second.

It was at this stage that Halys mounted a solid comeback, winning the next two sets in a row, to level things up for the final set.

Krajinovic was stretched yet again in the final set, winning it 7-5, but now comes into this second round match without any proper rest. He was expected to play on Monday but unseasonal rains postponed many of the matches on the outdoor courts to Tuesday. And now, having played five sets less than 24 hours before his match against Federer, things could get really tough for the Serb.
