Marin Cilic v Roberto Bautista Agut Head to Head

The two players have met six times prior and Cilic leads the head-to-head 4-2. Incidentally, their last meeting was in the round of 16 at the Australian Open last year (2019), which Agut won in a classic five- setter.

Cilic Looking To Rise From Career Low

The 2014 US Open champion, three time major finalist and former world number three Marin Cilic had the worst season of his career in 2019.

With injuries, poor form and several early losses, Cilic fell to just within the top 40 in the world and has looked a shadow of the player he was known to be.

2020 started well for Cilic with two wins at the ATP Cup but was setback by a disappointing straight set loss to Guido Pella.

He looked sharp in his first round encounter against Next Gen Frenchman and Doha finalist Corentin Moutet before he ran into a tough second round matchup against in-form Frenchman Benoit Paire.

In a back and forth contest, both players looked like being in control at different points, only to lose it soon thereafter. Cilic held his nerve and used his experience on the faster hard courts to prevail in a super tiebreak in a tight five-setter.

Confident after his victory against Paire, Cilic will hope to carry his form forward to the next round as he faces the in-form and solid Roberto Bautista Agut.

Solid and Consistent Agut To Make Next Round

Agut had the best season of his career in 2019. He defeated Novak Djokovic twice in the season, won the Qatar Open in Doha, was a Wimbledon semi-finalist and broke into the top 10 of the ATP rankings for the first time.

2020 has also got off to a strong start for Agut with a stellar performance in the ATP Cup representing Spain. The Spaniard won all his six singles matches without dropping a set and was instrumental in partnering Rafael Nadal and carrying Spain to the title encounter, where they lost to Serbia.

In his first round encounter, Agut ran into Spanish veteran Feliciano Lopez in what was a routine win for the ninth seed. As the draw gets tougher in Melborne, Agut will look to carry forward his current form and continue to be a threat to higher ranked higher players.

Marin Cilic v Roberto Bautista Agut Predictions & Tips

This promises to be an exciting match between two players with very contrasting playing styles.

Although Cilic is typically better suited to the faster, hard courts, he has not been in the best of form and Agut has been in vintage form sine the summer of 2019.

Expect a tussle between both, but Agut should prevail in four sets.
