Novak Djokovic v Yoshihito Nishioka Head to Head
This will only be the second time that Djokovic will be facing the 71st-ranked Nishioka, having met at the Davis Cup last year. Djokovic had led Serbia to a win over Japan in that one, defeating Nishioka 6-1, 6-2 in that match.
Djokovic Facing Second Japanese Player in a Row
After facing stiff resistance from Jan-Lennard Struff in his first round match, Djokovic had it slightly easier in the second round. Facing Tatsuma Ito, another Japanese player, he won in straight sets with his opponent looking good for a brief period in the second set.
Earlier, Struff had taken a set off Djokovic, who looked to have lost his focus and his serve on a couple of occasions in the third set. That said, Djokovic dug hard and came back to clinch the win, much like he has done all season already.
Having participated at the ATP Cup, Serbia won the title thanks to Djokovic’s six-match winning streak in the tournament. There was opposition from Kevin Anderson, Gael Monfils, Denis Shapovalov, Daniil Medvedev and Rafael Nadal and he barely broke into a sweat in getting past all of them. If that shouldn’t give him the confidence to go on and defend his title, not sure too many other things would.
Nishioka Carving out Own Niche
Japan’s men tennis has been led by Kei Nishikori for years but Nishioka is looking to carve out his own niche here. Before the Australian Open, the 71st-ranked Nishioka had never made it past the second round at any Grand Slam competitions but showed signs of massive improvement last year.
He made the second round at the French Open and US Open in 2019 and to now go one better here at the Australian Open should do him a world of good in the longer run.
After having come into the Australian Open on the back of a couple of wins at the ATP Cup and the Bendigo Challenger apiece, Nishioka defeated Laslo Djere and Dan Evans in his first two rounds here. In his own, these were not too different from Djokovic’s wins – he dropped a set in the first round and was an easy winner in the second.
However, the similarity could end there.

Djokovic is a whopping 1/50 to win this which makes no sense to put one’s money on. Instead, we could look at the Games Handicap as we expect Nishioka to give Djokovic bit of a fight here.
