Daniil Medvedev v Stanislas Wawrinka Head to Head
This is the third meeting between the two players. Medvedev won on both previous occasions in four sets.
The first win was in the opening round of Wimbledon 2017, which was also the early stages of Wawrinka’s knee injury that saw him out of action for more than a year. Their second meeting was at the US Open quarter-finals last year.

Daniil Medvedev announced himself in 2019 and has not looked back since.
Winning two Masters 1000s, four titles overall, defeating Novak Djokovic twice during the year, being a US Open finalist and moving to a career high number four ranking in the world were some of the highlights on his last season.
Despite a disappointing performance at the ATP Year-End Finals in London, Medvedev seems to be back in prime form in 2020. With a stellar performance at the ATP Cup for Team Russia, he has also looked in good touch this week and many believe he may finally be the one to uproot the Big Three by winning majors.
Apart from a momentary lack of concentration in his opener that saw him lose a set, he has been clinical in his last two rounds with straight set wins.
Wawrinka Looking At Repeat of 2014 Glory
Three time major winner and 2014 Australian Open champion Stanislas Wawrinka was ranked number three in the world in 2017 before repeated knee injuries saw him out of action for half of 2017 and most of 2018.
2019 was a better year for the Swiss as he returned to the top 20 in the rankings and was a finalist in Rotterdam and at Antwerp.
He has done well to make the second week here in Melbourne but also been lucky in his five-setter against Andrei Seppi and then played an indisposed John Isner, who eventually pulled out down a set and a break.
With the round of 16 stacked with the Big Three and plenty of the Next Gen, as well as the unpredictable Nick Kyrgios, Wawrinka will need to step up his level to that of 2017 and before, if he is to make a deep run here next week.
Daniil Medvedev v Stanislas Wawrinka Predictions & Tips
Although on paper this reads as a good matchup given Wawrinka’s run in major titles and his strong performances in Melbourne in the past, on current form Medvedev will start as a strong favorite.
The Russian has been on a very good run since the hard court season in the Americas last summer and has looked in similar form Down Under since the ATP Cup.
Wawrinka has not looked quite the player he was before his injury, despite returning to the top 20 in the rankings.
Although the Swiss can be dangerous if he goes on a run, Medvedev is currently too solid to be defeated by anyone outside the big Three.
Expect the young Russian to win a four-setter.
