Stan Wawrinka v Alexander Zverev Head to Head
This is the third meeting between Stan Wawrinka and Alexander Zverev. The young German Zverev leads the head-to-head 2-0.
Both their meetings were three- setters, at St. Petersburg in 2016 and Miami 2017 on the hard courts.
Wawrinka Aiming To Return To Top 10 in Rankings
Three time major winner and 2014 Australian Open champion Stanislas Wawrinka was ranked number three in the world in 2017 before repeated knee injuries saw him out of action for half of 2017 and most of 2018.
2019 was a better year for the Swiss as he returned to the top 20 in the rankings and was a finalist in Rotterdam and at Antwerp. Wawrinka was also a quarter-finalist at the French & US Open tournaments setting himself to aim for the top ten in the rankings in 2020.
The former world number three had a good start to this season before he lost in the Qatar Open semifinals in Doha to unheralded Frenchman Corentin Moutet after being up a set and a break.
He did well to make the second week here in Melbourne but was also lucky in his five-setter against Andrei Seppi and then played an indisposed John Isner, who eventually pulled out down a set and a break.
However, the Swiss raised his levels to those that he has been well known for, in his quarter final encounter against the Next Gen “Leader of the Pack” Daniil Medvedev. Wawrinka put up a stellar performance to come back from down two sets to one to win a decider.
As has often been the case, Wawrinka is getting to his best form during the latter stages of the tournament and could turn out to be a notable threat to the others in his half of the draw.
Zverev Targeting First Major Semi
22-year-old German Alexander Zverev reached impressive heights very early in his career even before the age of 20. By the end of 2018, he was the winner of three ATP Masters 1000 titles , and ended the year winning the Tour Finals in London and being ranked number three on the tour.
While he had not performed particularly well at the majors yet, plenty was expected from him in 2019.
What transpired was a disappointing season with on and off-court issues, poor form, disappointing results and despite a revival during the latter part of the year, Zverev only had one title all year, an ATP 250.
2020 was off to a similar start for the young German with a disappointing performance at the ATP Cup, where he lost all his singles matches.
However, Zverev has gone from strength to strength here in Melbourne. Although he did not have the most convincing of starts, his form has improved in recent rounds. The number seven seed is yet to drop a set and looked in fine form in his last two rounds against Fernando Verdasco and young Russian Andrey Rublev.
Zverev is in the quarter-finals of a major for the third time and will be looking to make his first slam semi-final.

Both players have been low in confidence in recent times but looking to make a statement with a deep run here in Melbourne.
While Wawrinka is a former champion and knows what it takes to win the major, he is still short on match practice, not completely back to his former fitness, and has already played two marathon five-setters. It will be keen to see how he recovers.
Young Zverev will be more energized and after a considerable amount of time has made the final eight of a tournament in a confident manner.
With his problems with the serve finally ironed out, if Zverev continues the form that he has been in, expect him to make his first major semi-final.
